Green Drink Ritual

A short, informal YouTube segment in which Randy, Adam Markel, and their daughter Chelsea demonstrate their daily "green drink" preparation. They list ingredients (cucumber, celery, carrot, avocado, spinach/kale, mint/cilantro, ginger, unsweetened coconut or almond milk, optional fruit or flaxseed), show blending (Vitamix), taste the result, and reflect on morning rituals, hydration, gratitude, and self-care.

Good morning, everybody. Randy here. I've sabotaged Adam's phone because he's inside chopping up all kinds of yummy, nutritious stuff for our green drink that we're going to show you how we make this morning. And this is a ritual that we do every morning to make sure that we're taking really good care of each other and taking good care of ourselves and our bodies and we have the energy for the day.
Woohoo.
So I'm out here. It's beautiful this morning. So good. Good morning. All right, I'm gonna bring you inside. Let's see. Turn my camera around here. There's my kitchen. Say hi, Chell.
Hi.
It's our beautiful daughter Chelsea. And there is Adam. Chopping, chopping. I hand the camera over there, everybody.
Good morning. Not sure where we're. We're finding you all today, but.
Oh, yeah, let's get a close up here.
Yeah. This menagerie of yumminess, you talk about the ritual.
I said this is our morning ritual so we can keep ourselves healthy and keep each other healthy.
You want to walk through what we've got on this plate?
Yeah, let's do that. I feel like, you know what, this is one of my. This is a really cool moment because in watching for years and years, we would watch Good Morning America, right, with a cup of coffee, and they'd always have somebody that would come on over those food shows and, and they always chop, chop, chop, chop, chop. And the segment's like two, three minutes long. So we figured out, you know what, they gotta have all that food prep done ahead of time. So that's what we did. So we're gonna give you the ingredients. This is a green drink. About six months ago, we met this. Actually about a year and a half ago, we met this gentleman, Eric Ed Means, who's absolutely amazing. And he has a WildFit program. That's the name of his program, WildFit. And last March, right around the time of my birthday, we decided we were gonna commit to this 90 day challenge. And part of that challenge was how we started the day, what we put in our bodies. And it's so incredibly important to, you know, I think beginning with I love my life, beginning with the words that you say and the thoughts that you have. And then that morning ritual becomes mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical. And this is the physical element is what we put into our body. So the green drink, baby. The green drink. Ready? So here's the deal. So first of all, we've got cucumber.
Cucumber, and let me just say one thing, which is you cannot screw this recipe up, because no matter what you add, if it's nutritious and green and lots of fruit, you're gonna be fine. But this is our recipe. So we have.
Is there water?
It's like atom proof. You cannot mess this up. All right, so cucumbers. My grandmother used to call them cukes. Then we got these here. Baby celery. Okay. Chopped up celery.
Lots of. Lots of hydration comes from celery.
Yeah, Just going to say this. So, Eric, one of the things we learned is that getting water, it's so important to have water. I was just reading an article the other day about how important water is. For one thing, you know, we all like three, four o' clock in the afternoon, might need coffee or sugar to keep us going and stuff. It's because we're dehydrated. Check that out.
Well, he actually taught us about how we have different kinds of hungers. And one of the hungers that your brain thinks you're hungry and it's really that you're dehydrated. So start drinking more water through the course of the day and notice if you're feeling less hungry.
And what's really cool about this is that this is a source of water. That's why I was thinking about it was that these vegetables like celery and cucumber are really, really high in water content. So you get water without having to drink a whole lot of water and then feel like you got to go to the bathroom. So the way this started out, I didn't even tell you this little bit of ice at the bottom. We have a Kenyan water machine. Just all you want to do is put good water in this. This is a green drink, but we also call it an alka gezer. So to bring our bodies back to a more alkaline state. So the water in here is actually water that comes from a Kangen machine. I'm not pitching Kangen. I'm just saying you want to have good water, alkaline water, that kind of thing.
So we put in cucumber, we put in celery, we put in some carrot. We're going to add some avocado.
We live in California and avocado is the best thing.
The best.
We love avocado. Cannot get enough avocado. So we're going to give you the sort of the traditional recipe. And then like Randy said, ooh, that fell on my finger. I'm going to eat that. You cannot Mess this up. And the best part is, to me, you can experiment. So I'm like a rugged individualist. I have trouble with rules and law and all that stuff, even though as a lawyer, I always want to maintain my independence. And what's cool about this recipe is you can do it any way you want within certain parameters that you get to, again, change if you like. So avocado went in. Yeah, let's hold off on this for just a second because I want to give that, like the traditional thing. So the next thing and three quarters of this puppy is going to be this stuff. Right?
Spinach and kale. Super greens.
Super greens. Power greens.
Two handfuls is what we use. Two nice sized handfuls.
Big, big handfuls. All right, so you see, that's probably.
More greens than I ate my entire childhood, because I would hide them and not.
Are you kidding me?
Well, I'm not proud of that.
No, no. I'm saying my parents are trying to put green on the plate. We put it on the plate, and then our do rebels would be right there at the side of the side of the dinner table. And I'm feeding the dog. All right, so now we put in a little bit of. You can put cilantro. Randy's not a fan of cilantro. Right. So we use mint instead. So you just put some mint in there. And now this is really cool.
Good for the belly mints.
Yeah. As is this stuff, too. Ginger. So right here you can see this. This is ginger root. It's really super inexpensive. That's also the cool thing about this. Very, very inexpensive. To do this, all these ingredients are next to nothing. And then. So just cut up some ginger. Put the ginger in there. All right, so you guys got the ingredients so far. Now here's some things that you can add. So we use coconut milk. So there's water already in there.
Unsweetened coconut milk.
Unsweetened, yeah. So we use this. So delicious. Dairy free, no dairy. Big, big deal. Unsweetened coconut milk. All right, so I put some of that in there.
There's no measuring, as you can see.
No meas. Come on. The best. Like your grandmother, she didn't measure. It's a pinch of this and a pinch of that. Right? All right, now. Oh, sorry. This one, too. Almond milk. Unsweetened almond milk. Really good stuff. We like Khalifa Farms. This gives a. Because it's a little thicker.
They sell it at our local store.
Yeah, we've gotten pretty attached. Now here's the thing that if you wanted it to be pure alka geyser type green drink. It's a little bitter. That's all you put in. Like you don't need. You could put in flaxseed, too.
Flaxseed, jalapeno.
Oh, some people do that. Cilantro, jalapeno, flaxseed for protein. But it's going to be bitter tasting and it's delicious. And your taste buds after a couple of weeks will only want this. But after a little while, you go, well, I'm craving some sugar. So you throw in some banana for those of you like that. You can put in apple and wow.
Some blueberries.
Crazy great antioxidants. Really good stuff, blueberries. You throw that all in there. Did we forget anything?
Doesn't matter.
That's it. All right, so this will be. Wow. Oh, yeah. Now this is a Vitamix. Thank you. In any event, you can use nutribullet. You can use any kind of a blender, but this one just happens to work really well. So here we go. Ready? If you come around, Check this out. This is actually cool about the Vitamix machine. And again, we don't have any interest in vitamix, But I just think it's really, really neat that you can change the speed sett and you can see all that goodiness just getting ground up.
Now you can see that Adam didn't use a blender much at the beginning of his life because he gets excited by the speed settings. That's very.
This is like a machine. It's like a car. This is like the. Look at this. Even looks like a Ferrari, right? It's a Ferrari of blenders. Now, what's cool that we learned is that you can grind it up really, really thin if you want it. But. But it's actually pretty cool that you can taste some of the pieces and the parts. So you get it a little bit in your.
The bits.
The bits, Right.
I personally like mine a little bit more blended. Adam likes a bit of more bits.
Yeah.
So depends who makes it.
So the comes out in the interest of a happy life. You know, after 27 years, you have a lot of blends around.
One more minute. So. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3. Thank you, dear.
Booyah. Here we go. Thank you.
Wow, that's a lot.
Yeah, we're going to be drinking that all day. Yeah, that's the beauty. In fact, we will be drinking this all day. Chelsea, you're going to get some of this, too.
I took out little cups right now. Adam usually has these like, gigantic cups. But for now, we'll just do what it is.
I want to show a serving size. Will you grab one?
Well, just a regular.
I know. I'm serious. A big one.
All right.
That's the way it goes.
I like to drink mine a little bit at a time.
Chelsea gets the biggie.
My coffee comes fresh today.
So I'm gonna put that there. That looks so nice.
Ready?
Cheers.
See how we did?
Cheers.
That's good.
Wow. That's really good.
Oh, wow. That's going down right now.
It's like a shot for you.
Green juice shot.
Green juice shot. And you know what presence and really appreciating what you're putting in your body. Like, just taking a moment and being thankful and having gratitude, knowing that you're nourishing your body and we're nourishing each other. That. That fills me up. Helps to fill my cup for the day. So here's to you guys.
One more time.
We're doing more.
And here's to gratitude.
Second shot of the morning.
So this is another ritual, and it's important, which is part of what we teach in the seven relationship pillars. But this is a big pivot for us, was to just be grateful, because life is challenging most days. On a good day, even, it's challenging here. It's challenging wherever you are. You know, just have to turn on the news and realize when we see all the tweets that are coming out of the White House these days, that life is challenging everywhere. So how do we nourish ourselves? Like Randy said, how do we take care of ourselves? Because that's our first responsibility. And then how do we take care of others? Because that's what we're here to do. So cheers to that.
Self love.
Right?
Chelsea's doing a radical self love challenge. You can check out on one of our Facebook pages and see what she's up to. And I feel, like, how lucky that we've gotten to model self love, and now our daughter is completely taking it over and bringing it to the next level.
So we love you guys. Cheers. Turn the camera around so you could say goodbye to everybody.
You done saying goodbye?
We're done.
Okay, bye. Let's see you guys around. Bye, everybody. See you later.
