Resilience Tip | Beliefs create Behaviors

Short video by Adam Markel offering a practical resilience tip: beliefs drive behaviors, so to change behavior (individual or organizational) you must first surface and address underlying belief systems. He advises leaders to check in with teams—learn what they believe about their future, the organization, and the world—to enable effective pivots and build a more resilient workforce.

Hi, I'm Adam and I'm a resilience guy. I've spent my entire career focused on what it takes to be at your best, even in the most challenging conditions, including writing the best selling book on resilience called Pivot. Well, we're in pivot times, and pivot times call for pivot principles. So here's one powerful tip that you and your teams can use today. Think about beliefs. Beliefs create behaviors. Change is a constant in the universe. We get that. And sometimes change is thrust upon us like it has now. And more often than not, we want to create change. We want to look at where our businesses can grow and evolve. We're always looking at how do we change something to create a better result. And often what we're trying to do is change behaviors. But all the evidence suggests, and I certainly write about this in my book, that you've got to do something before you start changing behaviors. And that is you have to change. You have to go in and look at what people actually believe about themselves, about the organization, about their teams, about the way the organization functions before you can actually start to change behaviors. So right now, one thing that you can do while we've all are dealing with change and many of us are working remotely, is to check in with your teams and see how they're feeling, to learn a little bit about what they believe the future holds for them. What do they believe the future holds for them? What do they believe the future holds for the organization? What do they believe the future holds for the world, even because that belief system is at the core of the behaviors that they will take. And if what you'd love is for them and for the team and for your entire company, in fact, to be able to pivot into the future to create momentum and utilize all this change for positive good, you're going to have to start by examining the belief systems that underline all change, the behaviors that have occurred so far and that are occurring now as we're even speaking. So it's a small shift, a small shift in your focus to look at the beliefs before you're actually looking at making changes to their behaviors. A small change, but it can pay a big dividend when it comes to creating a more resilient workforce. I'm Adam and I hope this helps.
