Resilience Tip | Reframe Fear

A short resilience tip from Adam Markel (author of Pivot) that reframes fear as a catalyst rather than only a threat. Markel suggests leaders and teams discuss what scares them and intentionally reframe fear to motivate commitment, risk-taking, and growth, making it a practical lever to build a more resilient workforce.

Hi, I'm Adam and I'm a resilience guy. I spent my entire career focused on what it takes to be at your best, even in the most challenging conditions, including writing the best selling book on resilience called Pivot. Here's one powerful tip that you and your teams can use today. Think about fear. I've been thinking about that for several days now. You know, we often think that fear is not a good thing. And in many ways, as FDR said, fear is the only thing we have to fear. But fear is also something that is a catalyst. And I know that a lot of people are in fear right now. A lot of your workforce and the people that are even connected to your company are in fear right now. And you may be in fear as well. And what I'm suggesting is that you can use fear as a catalyst. I know for me, it's gotten me to do things I never thought I would do. Fear has gotten me to commit to things at a higher level than I would have committed to them if it weren't for the fear. The fear of failure, the fear of judgment, the fear of rejection. There's so many things that fear can catalyze, can crystallize, can make possible simply because we're so uncomfortable feeling fear. So I'm reframing that word for myself. And it's one thing that you can bring up with your teams, you can bring up with your vendors and your contractors and anybody that's affiliated with your organization, just to have conversation about what scares them, what scares you, and how it is that you can turn that around and reframe that fear so that it's actually the fire that's lit beneath you in the gentlest way to get you to do things that are new, to get you to embrace things that are scary, to get you to play a bigger game in the world. And we all know that that's what's necessary for all of us as leaders right now. So this is just one small change that can make a big difference when it comes to creating a more resilient workforce. I'm Adam, and I hope this tip helps.
