Twitter response

A short video (or social post) in which Adam Markel, CEO of Peak Potentials, responds to a student’s question about whether to prioritize paying off credit card debt versus pursuing financial freedom. Markel explains his view that focusing on financial freedom (“pay yourself first”) while systematically paying down debt leads to better long-term outcomes than exclusively focusing on eliminating debt or simply cutting up credit cards.

Hello, Peaks family. This is Adam Markell, CEO of Peak Potentials. And I've been looking at some of the great comments that we've received on Twitter and Facebook. And one that we received today from a gentleman, one of our students, named Neil, I thought was really, really great. He asked the question. He said, you know, Robert Kiyosaki and some other folks are suggesting that you pay off if you've got any kind of, you know, credit card debt, that you first take care of retiring your credit card debt before you work on your financial freedom. Now, we honor and love Robert Kiyosaki and a number of the other people that make that suggestion. We just have a bit of a different perspective that we'd like to share. So hopefully I can clear up this seeming contradiction there for you. We believe in a universal principle that says what you focus on expands. In fact, say that right along with me. Say what I focus on expands. Thank you. What that means is that when you focus on something like your financial freedom, then you tend to move in that direction. When you focus on debt, then you tend to move in a circle that is involving debt, meaning that focusing on debt usually creates more debt. A lot of people out there suggest that you cut up your credit cards. The problem with that is that the habit that created the debt in the first place isn't resolved. Meaning cutting the credit card isn't the problem. In fact, that's not the solution either, because usually people that do that, that cut up those credit cards and eventually pay them off, and they end up getting themselves into other financial problems along the way because they didn't resolve the main issue, which is that they don't know how to manage their money. What we suggest instead, which I think is complementary to some of the things that some other folks suggest, is that you pay down your debt, but you pay yourself first. Meaning you pay your. You create a financial freedom account, an account that you contribute to on a monthly basis to create your financial freedom, and you pay that account first, not as a leftover strategy, which is what many people do. You know, they say, well, listen, I'll pay all my bills, I'll pay my credit cards, and whatever's left over at the end, I'll pay to myself. The problem with that is there's usually nothing left over at the end. So this is a bit of a counterintuitive way to approach the problem problem, which is that you actually focus on your financial freedom first. You pay yourself first, and then you create a fund to pay down your debt systematically. What's that word systematically. Thank you. You pay that down systematically so that you resolve the debt issue, you retire the debt but at the same time you put all of your energy, you put your focus and your attention on the thing that you want which is to create your financial freedom and that's what we want. That's the thing that we want to focus on and put our energy into in the first place. So hope Neil, that that makes sense for you and resolves that inconsistency in your mind that you know the difference between someone who's suggesting that you pay off all of your debt before you move toward financial freedom and our view of pig potential is that you put your financial freedom first, you focus your greater energy on that you, you retire your debt and that you watch how amazing things happen for you. I look forward to seeing all of you at one of our events very soon again. Neil, thanks so much for that question on Twitter.
