A short interview/conversation exploring the advantages of founder-led businesses and leadership transitions, with references to notable founders (e.g., Toby Luque) and companies (Shopify). The piece highlights rare cases where founders remain involved from the beginning and later assume CEO roles.
Yeah, you're definitely a rare cat in that sense. I mean, the only other friend I could think of is Toby Luque, who was able to be there from the beginning and very hesitantly became the CEO.
Of Shopify.
Right?
Yeah. Now running just an incredibly scaled business. But those stories, when they happen, you see how positive it is for the DNA of the company. I really think that founder led businesses are better businesses in general. As a founder, you need to be really deliberate about surrounding yourself with either the people or the knowledge resources to level up your knowledge. Because the way I always look at it is I'm doing the biggest job I've ever done every quarter. You know, you might look at and say, you've been doing this for 16, 17 years, aren't you bored? And I'm not. Because it's been a dramatically different job every year, every quarter of that, of that journey. But it's also been a huge learning pressure, like, how can I make sure that I'm keeping up with what's coming around the corner next? How can I make sure that I'm leveling up both myself and bringing people into the business that can help us tackle that next stage of growth?
