Jothi Dugar, a federal CISO at the NIH, reframes chaos as a growth tool and teaches 2-5 minute techniques to rewire your brain. She breaks chaos into three types: tsunami (emotional outbursts), riptide (hidden currents that pull you off course), and good chaos (creative energy). For digital privacy, she recommends limiting personal data on social platforms, using separate browsers for banking, and avoiding tagging children online.

Thank you, Jothi.
Right, is it pronounced— can you pronounce your first name?
Uh, Jothi.
Oh, Jothi Dugar in the house! Hi everyone! Hello Facebook friends! I, I, let me just take a second. I'm very excited. Jothi Dugar is coming all the way from Virginia to talk to us about not only the power of chaos but cybersecurity, and you have earned some really amazing awards. So, Jyoti, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? And then I just— it came off my computer screen that you just won a big, big award. So share, share.
You know, that is really funny that you say that because I think it's the last time I actually knew I won an award was on a podcast when the podcaster was like, yeah, I looked you up and it seems like you won this award. I'm like, Oh, what award was that? And he's like, oh, it's this one. I'm like, oh, I didn't know. I love that. Well, thank you for making my day. So I'm actually curious to see which one you found on the internet this time.
Oh, I just turned my phone off. All right, so tell us, tell us about the Power of Chaos first.
Sure, so I call myself the Chaos Guru just because I guess that's what my friends, family, and people that I talk to somehow came up with that term just because I've handled a lot of, or managed, and not just managed, but became aware of and managed a lot of chaos in my life. But once I managed them, I think I basically used and harnessed the power of chaos to really get me to where I am today. And I tell the story very differently than I would have maybe even like a few months ago, because before I really thought like, okay, you know, went through a lot of traumas in my life and I, and I got through them. But now I really understand that, hey, they all happened for me. And I'm not making light of anyone's situation. And I've been through a share of my own traumas that were just not pretty when you're going through them. But once you get to the other side, you realize it happened for a reason. And that's really what I, what I try to incorporate and inspire others. Like, you know, it's hard going through it, but that is the only way that is your path. You know, once you go through that tunnel, you do see like a whole new world.
That's it. So like a tunnel, like I feel like it's the, you're right, like a forest and you've got to walk through it. But then tell me about the chaos of COVID-19 and how you've been helping your clients through this horrible period.
Yeah. And you know, it's all about perspective. So you actually have a really good pathway into this. So if you think of it as a horrible period, that's what it's going to be for you or for those that think that way. But if you think of it as this is also happening for us, it's not really happening to us. But whoever believes in something higher than us, then you have to believe in something, right? Because you didn't create yourself and you didn't just pop in here like an alien one day and like, oh, hello, Earth. So I'm sure everyone believes in something or some other than you, whether you call it universe, source, God, whatever that might be. But this is basically a harmonizing effect for our existence. Because just think about your life before COVID and all of us are in the same boat, so there's no judgments here, including me. You're basically running life off of autopilot in this very unconscious way of living. Right? Like how often did we actually take a pause in our day and like, okay, you know what? I haven't spent time with our kids and really be giving our kids like our undivided attention. You know, most of us, if you're like me and you're type A personality and you're, you're on this overdrive, just trying to be the superwoman or super dad or super mom, you're like, okay, you know, must get kids into as many activities as I can. Cause you gotta save for college. You gotta do this. You gotta be an expert in all these other things. And then me, okay. Yeah. Well, you know, I got to do the cybersecurity thing. I got to do this wellness thing and this chaos thing. I'm going to write a book. I'm going to do this. And like, okay, and at some point, you know, you're going to burn out and get overwhelmed and really might not have the effect that you really want to have. So I do believe COVID, corona, this whole pandemic is happening for us. It's for a reason. It's for us, all of us, I think, to take a step back and really look at our lives. Is this what we want to do? Is this who we want to be? Is this what we want to offer the world for generations to come, even when we're physically not here on this planet anymore? And really those questions are, I think, coming to life right now. And also, do you have to put your kids in 20 different activities? Or can they just be kids? Right now, since everyone is in a closed contained unit, it's become apparent, at least to our household, like, okay, well, one or two activities might be good, but we don't have to really force our kids to do everything and anything just to please a handful of colleges out there. And I think even that is starting to change. I don't know. I don't know if you've been monitoring that, but there's tons and tons of online education and online institutions that were previously thought of as kind of like subpar. Like, oh, you went to an online institution? Oh, so that means you must not have gotten into a real, real college, right? But now, you know, it's actually becoming, starting to become kind of old, philosophy now. It's like, yeah, you could go to a real, um, a physical presence, um, that a university has. But now I think it's the way the world is going to start changing is— but you know, that's— no one can say like that's actually so much better than, uh, learning online, um, you know.
So what about the chaos in the mind?
So, um, so the way— so when, as I was going through a lot of chaos in my life, through different chapters, not, not that everything happened at once, but, you know, um, I've gotten myself through, uh, um, wellness and health-related traumas, um, relationship traumas, and, and just survival traumas. And one thing that I realized is that there's, there's different types of chaos. So I'm not saying all chaos is good, but there are certain types that are good. Um, so I call it, just to keep it simple, I call it the the bad and the ugly. Starting with the ugly first, I call it kind of like a tsunami chaos. When you think of a tsunami, there's a trigger, and then that trigger causes the ocean to kind of act a little weird, and then it just comes like roaring across and basically destructing everything in its path. And that type of chaos does happen to us sometimes, right? Somebody says something or an event happens and it triggers something inside us. So if we look at ourselves as like the ocean of life, something causes a trigger inside our own ocean of life. And then, you know, we start kind of getting frustrated or angry, or we start taking it out on others that really had nothing to do with that trigger. And then little by little, if we're not able to release that trigger, then we just, you know, come roaring across the next person that comes down our path, you know, poor soul. And The way to release that tsunami chaos is through a mind-body energy connection. So in my chaos programs, chaos transformation programs, I don't teach people how to, you know, build the chaos. I teach them how to manage and harness, transform the chaos. I don't think anyone will join my program if I say I want to add more chaos. So everything is Everything is connected. So your mind, your body, your energy, your spirit, it's all connected. You are also connected. Like, we're on this show because we connected in some way or shape or form, and we're all connected in some way, shape, or form as well. So from the mind perspective, it all starts with mindset and perspectives and changing your perspective on things. And it's also little tricks. So what I really specialize in is things that seem like micro actions, but that carry a massive impact. So, 'cause, you know, with 3 kids and having businesses, writing books and being a cyber executive, I really don't have the time of day to spend 45, you know, finding a calm space and then spending an hour doing a meditation and then trying to bring that back to the real world. And it really didn't work for me either. Meditations are great, don't get me wrong, It— unless you— most people are really not good at these kind of things, right? They feel like they're doing it, but you have to be really determined and disciplined, um, and also be being able to kind of bring that back to a chaotic situation. Um, so what I specialize in is, is kind of, um, 2-minute or 3-minute or 5-minute techniques that you could use, um, in your daily activities And the total effect of that is what's really going to start changing your— rewiring your brain about yourself. And then as you rewire your brain and your mindset, your physical body will actually start changing. So all of these ailments and dis-eases and things like that will slowly start releasing. And by changing your mind and body, your energy will also change. So a lot of— so it's all— it's a— so there's— it's a comprehensive, like, mind, body, energy techniques to release the tsunami chaos. And then when we get to the bad chaos, it's not really bad per se, but it's a little confusing. So this, this one is similar to the riptide. You don't really notice a riptide is there until you actually go in it. And then once you're in it, then you realize like there's a, there's a, there's a current or there's some sort of like energetic factors here that are causing you to go down or be pushed farther away. And that same thing can be true in our existence. So for example, you're looking for a relationship and, you know, you're trying to date, you're trying to find people and it's really not working out and you're wondering why. And maybe on paper you have all the qualifications that you need, but then in your bedroom you have a picture that's framed and it looks beautiful. It's like this beautiful desert with one tree on it. And so guess what type of energy you're actually attracting to yourself? It's one of loneliness. And you might wonder, well, it's just a picture, like What does that have to do with anything? Well, it has everything to do with you, just because everything boils down on Earth to an energy. So even if you boil an atom down, it boils down to a form of energy, which is why we're all connected. So even the picture emits a certain type of energy to you. So have you ever gone to a store and you're trying to look for a shirt and then you just see a bunch of shirts and then you kind of naturally gravitate towards like one, one shirt. Why is that? Why didn't you gravitate towards this other shirt? It's because there's something that you and that shirt have like are on that same level of frequency, right? The same thing with people, right? You, you know, we just got on the call and we just suddenly started talking. You could get on another call and then you could just, you know, you might have someone that's just like, okay, I know, I don't know, there's just like nothing in common here. I just don't feel the, there's no vibe. You know, people call it different things like vibe or connection or just like, you know, the X factor. It's all about energy. So we really, we go a little bit deeper into that, into the program and we help bring awareness to these different factors. Your energy type, you actually have an energy type. So based on your energy type, there's actually certain clothes that you're— that bring your love, your, your energy up for you. So I'm energy type 1. So if I were a type, like if I wear black or brown or really heavy clothes, it actually literally brings my energy down. Which you might not realize until you actually start experimenting. Like, oh yeah, I totally feel— so it's almost like you're starting your day off on the wrong foot, they say. So you're literally starting your day off just wearing clothes that are really not good for you, quote unquote. So we go through a lot of that for the bad. The great thing about the Riptide Chaos is that It's hard to identify and become aware of, so you do need a trained professional to let you know these are some factors, but it's a quick change, right? All you got to do is wear a different kind of shirt that's meant for your energy, maybe cut your hair differently, change that picture to two lovebirds, or, you know, just quick changes that can really have a massive impact. But then there is the good chaos. I'm looking at your reaction and I'm going, oh, she's like the water shed.
This is great stuff.
It is. It is. It's really eye-opening. I mean, it was for me too. I didn't invent these things, but what I do specialize in is bringing it in a way that doesn't seem too woo-woo to people, because there is a science and an art behind anything that seems woo-woo.
I was going to ask that, like what age group? First of all, can I just tell you, whatever you're wearing is beautiful. The color, the pop of color over your fireplace is lovely. What is the age group that really tends to believe?
So I would say late 30s, starting at late 30s and all the way up. Just because before 30s, you're kind of like in that zone of life where you don't really care, you're just like, okay, I'm just gonna do what I want, this is what I'm gonna do, da da da. And then you're not really in that awareness mode. When you start nearing your 40s, and especially 40 and up, I think that's when you start automatically taking a step back and like, hmm, well, okay, I mean, I'm in this profession, but I really don't feel fulfilled. Or I just feel tired and burnt out all the time. And you start really questioning, I don't really wanna do this, so what else do I do? And sometimes you, you have that feeling of stuckness. And I would urge everyone, you know, it's not— you're never stuck. You're never stuck. You know, so just know that you're— this feeling of stuckness is coming to you for a reason. Because there are others that might be in the same job, or maybe even the same company for 50 years and feel like, yep, I want to do the same thing every day. And I'm okay with that. But this feeling of stuckness is coming to you, and I see that you raised your hand. It's because it's trying to tell you something. So your intuition is always connected to the source or universe or God or whatever you want to call it, and it's trying to tell you like, okay, well, maybe there's a change that's needed here. So really ask your— always trust your intuition. It's there for a reason. Been, um, you know, I've experienced this myself when the few times that I did not trust my intuition and I allowed something to happen, and, and, you know, it was horrible. So, um, I mean, I know it's, it's all meant for me, it's to, you know, uh, I found the gifts and learned my lessons from that. But, you know, it could be trying to tell you like, well, maybe this isn't the right, um, career for you. Or it could mean also, because I know some people, like, if you become a doctor and then now you're like, well, what do I do now? I just spent like 30 years, you know, getting to this, this, this point. I'm not saying you have to completely jump ship into a totally different career, but at first what you might want to do is find— okay, so you have this career that, yeah, you know, I'm not really feeling fulfilled, and I kind of don't feel like that's, that's what I'm meant to do. Like, okay, you don't have to Quit right now at this moment, at least keep that going, but then find something that does fuel your passion, that does, you know, give you that vitality, the reason why you want to get up in the morning and see if there's any way you can merge the two together. And that's what I did with the chaos and the wellness, the holistic wellness. I was in that space and then I was also in cybersecurity. And I was in this, the same crossroads. I'm like, well, I like both, but do I have to drop one to do the other? What am I really meant to do? And little by little, I started kind of trying to merge both together. So I started, I started the first health and wellness program in my organization. And I'm like, ah, you know, I'll just, I'll just start one because there, there wasn't one. And I noticed there, there's a need. For one, 'cause everyone was getting tired and burnt out and stressed all the time. It was a high-pressure, high-stress field. So, you know, why not bring it to them? And then little by little, you know, it got, it's really successful now. So there is a way, it's coming, this problem is coming to you for a reason. So it's meant for you to solve. And you should be proud of that, you know? So I know my family always laughs at me for that, you know, when I say like there's a problem that comes and I'm kind of like, yes, there is a challenge here and I— and this is great. And they're like, but you're— somebody just told you off. I'm like, yes, they told me off for a reason and I'm gonna figure that— I'm gonna figure this out. And you know, it's, it's— that means the universe is trying to talk to me and I, I must not have listened very well because You know, usually that's usually what happens because the universe, you know, sends you like small signals which most of us tend to ignore. Like, you know, we don't have time for that. And then the universe will send you a little bit bigger signal, and then most of us tend to ignore that. And then finally it's kind of like, okay, you know what, we're just gonna— we're gonna have to send you something that will really make you, um, listen or learn.
I have a question for you. It's funny because I think, like, just coming on, I had to switch my computer, and I'm thinking, is there a reason for that? So I tend to start thinking, but today, today your conversation is kind of really— it's important for me. I'm not feeling myself today. Like, I am feeling just like what you said. I, I, I don't even know how to describe it, but I'm not I'm not feeling as energetic and as excited and motivated as I normally am. But so thank you because your, your conversation with me actually helped me. But I want to ask you about the cybersecurity and I want to just go specifically because I just wrote to a girlfriend of mine and I said, be careful of those games on Facebook. And then I went to Google it to find like more information to tell her why privacy and all of that. And then most of the articles of the news stories were a little older. Is it still a problem right now, people playing those like games where they like the personality? Because I don't know how they work, but I know that you do have to say yes to a lot of different things to allow it. Could you just talk about that for a few minutes?
Sure, no problem. Um, yeah, so anything you put on Facebook, you're being tracked, right? Um, I mean, it's a public site. Um, yes, you can have certain permissions and have your friend groups, but it's a website and it's, the purpose of it is to collect information from you. And they openly do that. It's not like they're trying to hide, which is why you basically sign off on, you're basically signing your life away, literally. So I wouldn't put too much information, especially like picture. I mean, if it's a picture of you, that's fine, but then people are putting pictures of their kids and Hey, I'm in this country right now, which basically tells a hacker or an adversary or a criminal that you're not home. So, you know, it's very easy to find out where you live and basically try to go to your home because we all know that you're in, you know, you're in Hawaii right now. So I wouldn't do that to begin with. But then also, yeah, anything you click on not just Facebook, but really anywhere, Amazon, you have all of these ads and then you have, oh, click here for this free thing or that free thing or this game or that game. Yeah, I mean, it's all being tracked and you should really look at what are you saying yes to and not just on websites, but also on your phone, right? A lot of people have these apps, you know, I really need this app, but then why does a calendar need access to your pictures and to your camera and to your mic and to your location. All I'm doing is entering some tasks in my calendar. So I'm not saying don't use it, but just be aware that it's, you know, the more you include these apps and the more you click on these kinds of things, then the more you're just opening yourself up, 'cause anyone can then hack into your phone. I can turn your camera on.
I hate to interrupt you, but are you opening up besides yourself, but are you opening up the door for your friends that are connected with you? Can they access anything for someone else?
Sure, yeah. So, you know, especially for those that are like tagging you, because now you're automatically connected. So, you know, if you have kids, be especially careful because a lot of— I found a lot of people would take like a group picture and they'll start tagging like everyone's mothers. Oh, look at this picture I have. And I've actually made it very clear to all my friends, like, first of all, don't take pictures of my kids. And if you do, that's fine, but just keep it like with you. I don't want to see it on Facebook. If you happen to put it on Facebook, because it's, you know, since I'm a dance director, there's a lot of people like, oh, we want to put this group picture. I'm like, okay, but don't tag me on your picture because now you're automatically connected with that person and they can tell like, oh, which, which kid is yours? And they can find more information about the kid, where they go to school, where you live, you know, you're just opening up doors. But from a, from the perspective of websites, so I would, I always recommend having multiple browsers. So if you use Firefox for banking, then use Chrome or Internet Explorer for all of your other stuff like Facebook. So don't— yeah, and especially don't use multiple tabs in the same browser doing important things and unimportant things. So if you're banking on one tab and then you open up another tab for Facebook and another tab for Bank of America, another tab for Amazon, then basically if I am able to compromise your Facebook account through some ad, I can now get to all of your other tabs. So I can get to your bank information, you know, I can get to your, you know, the other important— and the scary part of that is I'm coming in as you, so your bank is not going to flag this for you because they're like, oh, you, you, it's you, right? It's not like some— it's not like they can see that you're in Virginia, but then there's IP from Africa because I'm basically coming in through your account. So it's not even like easily trackable.
So yeah, wow, cybersecurity for hours. Yeah. So, so you do cybersecurity for, for— who do you work for with cybersecurity?
I work for the federal government. So I'm their chief information security officer for national institutions. Institutes of Health, their Center for Information Technology. So all of the enterprise technology that's, that's used by the NIH and other government agencies. And also, we actually help support hundreds of research institutions and organizations around the world. So it's about like 300,000 people. Oh my gosh. Wow.
Have you ever spoken to SCORE? Uh, score.org?
No, what's that?
Okay, so we are an arm of the SBA. We are free, we do free certified mentors. So I'm like a certified mentor. We offer workshops and it's score.org. About 10,000 volunteers, just a handful of employees. Most of them work out of Washington, D.C., but I would love to have you do a SCORE presentation on cybersecurity. That would be amazing. May I email you the information?
Oh, sure, sure. Of course. Yeah, I haven't heard of that.
Oh, oh my gosh. It would be really wonderful because our audience is— our audience— also, my Connecticut came out of me. Our audience is business owners. So anyone in any stage of their entrepreneurial life. So that's the whole thing with score.org. We used to be older, now we're younger. I'm kind of like the newer face. And so score.org is a wonderful organization. So I'd love to have you do a— if that's okay, we'd love to have you do a, a workshop on cybersecurity. So thank you so much for your time today. Sure, I really appreciate it. It's the mindset. So how could we So I love the idea that it's short because anything really too long, my mind does start to wander and it's hard for me to pull myself in. So is it the book that you have? Do you have YouTube videos? Yes.
Yeah. So the book is, it's a chapter that I wrote in a book called Busting Burnout for Badass Leaders. But I do have a full book coming out early next year. On the chaos theory and chaos as your best friend. Still haven't ironed down the exact title yet, but that is the full book. This is kind of the ultimate guide to self-healing was a chapter I wrote in a consorted effort with multiple authors. But yeah, everything can be found on my website, www.jyothidugar.com. So I have my books. You can book a Chaos Clarity call with me to talk more about the programs or And within the call itself, you'll, you'll get a lot of clarity. So it's no pressure, you know, no hassle. I hate being sold to myself, so I tend not to do that with others.
I love that.
I love that.
Oh, I love your personality. Thank you so much for your time. So, so if you have a YouTube channel, let me know because I would love to watch your YouTube channel.
Oh, YouTube videos. Yes. I'm sorry. Yes. So this is Jyoti Dugar. Just search for my name on YouTube, that's there. But if you're looking for free resources that I do have videos for, for these quick techniques, some of these quick techniques, that's also on my website. So if you just go to jyothijugad.com/resources, you'll find at least like a whole bunch of resources that will be helpful with quick videos as well.
Thank you so much. Oh my gosh, thank you, thank you, thank you. I really can't thank you enough for your time today. You've helped me, so I know you've helped others, and I'll put it on YouTube and give everyone the information. So thank you.
Thank you so much for having me.
Have a great rest of the day.
You too. This is great.
