It is a short broadcast/radio-style segment from the Wake Up Today program featuring financial commentator Alan Akina and two hosts (Speaker A and Speaker C). Alan presents a top-5 list of free or low-cost activities for island families during spring break (mini service projects, visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, visiting the local Humane Society, jumping at Waimea Bay, and making a family movie/slideshow). The hosts respond and endorse his suggestions. The content is aimed at families looking for budget-friendly spring break options.
It is spring break for a lot of island keiki this week. What to do? But we do not want to break the bank in the process. Financial guy Alan Akina has some helpful tips.
Good morning, gang. Are your kids driving you crazy running around the house with nothing to do? If so, here are my top 5 free things that you can do with your kids for the remainder of spring break. Number 5, do a mini service project. Maybe cut the grass for an elderly neighbor or do a beach cleanup or something to help your community. Number 4, visit Pearl Harbor's USS Arizona Memorial. It's free and a great educational experience for the kids. Number 3, visit your local Humane Society. This is a great opportunity to teach your children about caring for animals. I also recommend looking into adoption or joining their volunteer program while you're there. Number 2, jump off the rock at Waimea Bay. We have some of the best beaches in the world. Let's enjoy them. And number 1, make a movie or a picture slideshow of all of your activity days. There's tons of free online software to create movies with your digital camera. Now be sure to set aside some time on Sunday to watch the movie with your family. For Wake Up Today, I'm Alan Akina. See you on Monday.
Thank you, Alan. I was thinking the exact same thing because in my neighborhood there's all these kids.
All kinds of kids that are running around.
And they're not really doing anything, and I was thinking, gosh, you know, I wish there was something that they could do.
Those are a lot of great tips, and yes, if you do make your way to the Valor in the Pacific, which is all of the different— the USS Bowfin and the USS Arizona. It is spectacular. It's one of the nicest, most beautiful things you will see. So you definitely want to make your way over there. It is— it's an absolutely amazing experience, and it's free. It is just remarkable.
