Alli Peck explains why self-awareness matters at work: it helps you interview better, chart a clearer career path, and avoid repeating bad job fits. She recommends three ways to build it: stay curious instead of judgmental, notice what you like and dislike at work, and ask colleagues for feedback.

Do you think you're a self aware person? As an employee at a corporate job, it is so important for your career that you are self. Aware. In this video, I'm going to go over three reasons how to be self, aware, how to become self aware, and three reasons why you should be self. Aware. So let's get into it. I'm Alison Peck, AKA Aliefrate, and I make career development content so that I can help you learn from my mistakes. So, so first, why are we going to become self? Aware? Why is this important? First of all, this helps with interviewing. If you've ever been at a job and you've thought, oh, I hate this job, in the interview, I just, this is not at all what I thought it was going to be like. They catfished me. What could I have asked in the interview that would have shown me that this is what it would be like? How was I supposed to know? Enter self awareness. If you are a self aware person, especially in your career, you'll know exactly what types of interview questions to ask. Let me give you an example. If you hate working from a micromanager, one question you can ask in your interviews is, hey, hiring manager, can you describe your management style to me? Are you more of a handholder? Are you more of a, I let my employees be autonomous and do whatever they want. Can you describe that a little bit to me? Usually a micromanager will tell you, I like to check in a lot. That can be a red flag for you. And since you have self awareness, you know that you don't thrive under a micromanager. Nobody does. And maybe you should pass on that job. Now we're going to go to the second reason why self awareness is important at work. Self awareness helps steer the trajectory that is your career. Scratch that. Self awareness steers the ship that is your career trajectory, your career path, your career journey. If you are self, aware, you'll know what you're good at, you'll know what you like, what you don't like doing, what types of companies you like, working for what types of jobs you like, what skills you have or what skills you don't have and you want to strengthen or what skills you do not have and you do not want to strengthen. Self awareness. I think of it as always being one step ahead of yourself and knowing yourself so much that you know the future that you want for yourself. All right, and the third reason why self awareness at work is important? You will reduce the chances that you'll find yourself in an unfavorable situation again. Just like number one, if you're sitting at work going, I do not like this job. How did I find myself here? If you're self, aware, you are less likely to find yourselves in those types of situations. So now let's go over three ways that you can become more self aware. Number one, come from a place of curiosity, not judgment. What do I mean by that? Especially for your own self, instead of belittling yourself or using negative self talk, come from a place of curiosity and say, I wonder why that meeting didn't go so well. Or I wonder why I really stumbled on my words when I was giving that presentation. Instead of beating yourself up about something, be curious about yourself. Ask yourself questions. When you can ask yourself a question and you know the answer to it, that is becoming self. Aware. The number two way to become more self aware at work is understand what you like doing and what you do not like doing. A mentor of mine once told me, don't get good at something you don't like doing. So how do we know what we like doing and what we don't like doing and how can we apply that to work? Well, let's say you love doing documentation. That's part of being self aware. Let's say you don't like doing documentation. You can let your manager know that and that will help steer you away from doing those tasks. If you have a good manager who listens. The third way you can become more self aware at work is ask for feedback. Ask others how they see you. You can approach a coworker that you trust or that you like or that you admire. And you can say, hey, I'm doing a self awareness exercise and I wanted you to describe me in three words. See what they say. See, See if you agree with them. If they're a total shock to you, you might not be as self aware as you thought. So that has been three reasons why self awareness is important at work and three reasons how you can become more self. Aware. I hope you liked this video. As always, please give me a like and subscribe to my channel and I will see you next time.
