As a corporate employee, are you prepared for layoffs and the recession that people say is looming in 2023? There are three things you can be doing to prepare yourself so that there is minimal impact to your career and your finances. I'm Alison Peck, AKA Ali, from Corporate, and I make career development content so that you can learn from the mistakes that I've made in my career. So. So let's get into it. The number one thing I'd say people should be doing in order to protect their career or soften the blow if they get let go is nurturing your network. Make sure you're on LinkedIn. Make sure you're reaching out to people in your industry. Just say hi. Ask them how work is going. Also post articles that you feel are relevant to your industry or comment on other people's posts. If you nurture your network when you don't need your network, they're more likely to respond positively when you approach them because you do need your network. Does that make sense? Let's talk about the second thing you could be doing to protect yourself or soften the blow if you get laid off this year. The second thing you can be doing to prepare you and your career for potential layoffs or a recession is being conservative with job hopping. What is job hopping? Job hopping, the way that I would define it, is jumping from job to job at different companies in less than yearly increments. I always advise people if you can stay at a job for at least a year before you go to another one. Now, with a recession looming and layoffs happening all around us all the time now, you want to be a little more careful about risk with your career. I would say that job seekers do not have the upper hand right now. And, and actually, companies have the power. Comment below if you disagree with this. It's a strong opinion. The third thing you can be doing to prepare yourself for potential layoffs or recession in 2023 is way easier said than done. And this is to save up at least six months of income for a rainy day. And by rainy day, I mean getting laid off. Right now, on average, it's taking people about three to six months to find a new job if they're laid off. You don't want to have to be a desperate job seeker and take the first job that's offered to you. If you've been laid off, you'd rather put yourself in a good position, have some money saved up, have been nurturing your network so that you can call on them now when you need them and be able to just de stress from a job that just laid you off, it can take a mental toll on you in a big way. So those were the three things that I advise people to do. If you want to recession proof yourself and if you're scared of potentially being laid off from your job. I hope you loved this video.
