Two people describe their addiction struggles: one used alcohol before work, the other spiraled from high school drinking through oxycodone and cocaine. Both say that finding purpose and something you value more than escape is what keeps you from relapsing.
I want to go even deeper in our experiences of really battling addiction, because I used to be the type to, like, right before work, like, I would be a little high. Like, I would take some shots in the bar, like, behind the bar, you know what I mean, to, like, take the edge off.
My senior year of high school, um, I started, like, drinking a little more. I got into oxys, and I started doing cocaine, and then I started doing ecstasy, and it just was a wild downhill spiral. A countering force to addiction is purpose and fulfillment. Because if you have something that you want more than you want to escape, then you won't escape.
