Andrew Hamada describes Amazon's new Rapid Retail analytics API, a point-of-sale data feed that provides near-real-time hourly sales (available within about 5–10 minutes after the hour). He highlights the practical benefit—being able to monitor and change advertising tactics hour-by-hour—and warns about a speed-versus-accuracy trade-off: the rapid feed skips Amazon’s usual preprocessing and reconciliation, so data should be treated cautiously.

Amazon has finally answered the call for real time data with the new vendor Rapid Retail analytics API. This is the point of sale data companion to Amazon Marketing Stream. Now you can not only see how your ads are performing, you can see how your overall sales are performing by the hour within five to ten minutes of the hour. Completing it might be important for you to see hourly sales performance because you have the opportunity to change advertising performance by hour and in real time. If you notice that you launch a campaign and over the next five hours that your sales aren't translating the way that you were expecting them to, then you have the opportunity to change that. The trade off that you have to make when you use real time data through APIs like Rapid Retail analytics is accuracy. Amazon is providing that data to you as quickly as they can, but they're not doing any of the normal pre processing and reconciliation that they do before data hits their standard reporting structure and so you have to take that data with a grain of salt.
