The Challenge With Amazon Data Insights

Andrew Hamada explains why Amazon data pipelines fail: engineers without Amazon knowledge can build systems but can't diagnose problems, while Amazon experts lack the engineering skills to extract and store data. You need both.

Brands that sell on Amazon when they want to start managing data often run into a problem where their data engineering teams are not familiar enough with Amazon's super esoteric data, or they have sales teams who are super familiar with Amazon's esoteric nature but aren't data engineers. They need both in order to make a data pipeline work. If you have data engineers without the Amazon context, they'll be able to build a pipeline, maintain a pipeline, but when things go wrong or metrics don't make sense, they won't be able to help you breach Bridge to why and they won't be able to help you understand what the top five reasons might be out of the 200 possible drivers of wrongness. If you have somebody who is super familiar with what Amazon data means and how it works, but doesn't have any data engineering expertise, they might understand what data they need, but won't understand the complexities of how to get it, store it, and what challenges are going to be faced along the way. For brands to effectively create their own Amazon data pipelines, you need both.
