What to do during a Texas Freeze? Check out today's Drew Two!

Drew warns Dallas-Fort Worth residents that the region has no snowplows or salt trucks. If you crash, stay in your car and call for help. Lower your thermostat a few degrees, dress in layers, and cover outdoor faucets with fabric to prevent frozen pipes.

Hey now, DrewTube time. Want to talk about our Texas freeze that might be occurring here over the next couple days. In Texas, when it gets to freezing, it's kind of a big deal. I know other states, they can handle it, but we don't have a single snowplow or salt truck, at least not in Dallas-Fort Worth. So when things get dicey here in the cold weather, it can cripple the city. 3 things I want you to be aware of. 1, if you get into an accident on the road, stay in your vehicle. Your vehicle is designed to take an impact. You are not. More people die or get seriously injured from exiting their cars than staying in it. If you get into an accident, pull off to the side, call for help, stay in your vehicle, especially if you're on the interstate. Number 2, your HVAC system works extraordinarily much harder than it does in the summer. Yeah, when it's 100 degrees, that's only 30 degrees lower than it needs to get to reduce it to 70. When it's 20, that's 40 and 50 degrees higher that it has to work. It works harder during times like this. Think about setting your thermostat a little bit lower to help compensate. We don't want your bill being up. Ask the kids and family to wear some extra layers. And the third thing I want you to do is what I'm doing right now. I'm working on my outside pipes. So disconnect any water hoses from it. And then there's some neat shielding that you can buy to cover your faucet. These are less than $5. If you don't have these, or if they're sold out, just put a t-shirt or blanket over it. Give me some insulation on this water spigot. The ambient heat from your house should help keep everything good, but this one piece that's outside in the elements, especially when it's below freezing for more than 24 hours, should have some type of protection. Use this or some other type of fabric to cover it. Hey, stay in your vehicle, lower that thermostat, cover those pipes. Thanks for watching today's Drew 2. We'll talk with you soon.
