Arthur C. Brooks argues happiness isn't the absence of negative feelings but a mix of enjoyment, satisfaction, and meaning. Negative emotions are survival signals that should be managed, not eliminated. Young people often mistake unhappiness for a broken self needing fixing, when learning to live with difficult feelings is what actually builds a meaningful life.

What to you is happiness? Happiness is a combination of enjoyment and satisfaction and meaning. It's not a feeling. It's the most important thing, especially for young people to understand that people think that happy feelings are happiness. That's wrong. You can actually manage your feelings, but you need negative emotions. A lot of young people today, they think that if they feel unhappiness, that it's evidence there's something wrong with them. There's something broken in them and they need therapy or they need some sort of medical treatment. That's wrong. If you didn't have unhappy feelings, you'd be dead. Negative emotions are supposed to keep you safe and alive. The point is actually managing them so that they don't manage you. The goal is to actually acquire more enjoyment of your life, more satisfaction in your accomplishments, and a sense of why you're alive, which is meaning. That's what real happiness is.
