Dr. Arthur Brooks describes how inviting God into his marriage shifted his love from selfish dependence on his husband to sacrificial, divine love by making God his primary relationship.
Chapters
In order for me to really love my husband, I had to let God into our marriage. I had to open the doors to the divine, the source of love. And when I did that, my love became, instead of being a human love, selfish, needy. It became divine. It became pure love, sacrificial. Most importantly, I realized that he was my God. He was my idol. I was dependent completely on him for my happiness. And if he didn't give me exactly what I needed in every exact moment, I was unhappy and I was so needy. It was very selfish. The moment I said no, no, no, you're going to number two and God's going to be number one. God's going to be my number one love. Our marriage changed completely the moment we let this happen. What happens is I don't need him to be happy. I have a relationship with God so that I can make him happy with my love. Or better said, so that I can love him in a non selfish way.
