Arthur C. Brooks argues that modern culture wrongly treats unhappiness as a medical problem and that technology, smartphones, and social media cannot provide genuine happiness or fulfill romantic love. These digital tools actually contribute to unhappiness and cannot replace authentic human connection.
There's like a bunch of different things that makes it really hard to be a young person in general, but especially today.
But do you think that we have a false perception of what life should even be? We think a false sense of happiness.
Yeah, yeah. Number one is that we're laboring today under this idea that unhappiness is the enemy, that unhappiness is unnatural, that unhappiness is a medical problem. It can be, but for most people it just isn't, and that's the wrong approach. The second is that we're looking for happiness in technology and devices. In ways that are really, really unhappy. And you're not gonna get that from your phone. You're not gonna get that from any app or any social media. And you're not gonna find, by the way, the proper kind of love that you need, even in a romantic way, from any of the technologies that are on offer.
