Short interview-style transcript excerpt (YouTube) in which two speakers discuss cognitive changes with aging. Speaker A reports declines in concentration and memory for names and movie titles but preserved imagination and increased ease with long-form creativity; they also say their writing craft has improved and they have several novel ideas planned.
I'm curious about if you're seeing particular patterns of strengths that have gotten stronger and weaknesses that have gotten greater as you've gotten older.
Yeah, weakness is definitely going to be concentration. I can't remember anybody's names, names of movies, stuff like that. I'd be worried about it, except I've had it for a dozen years. Concentration. In terms of long periods of reading, I think the imagination is pretty positive. I think that's staying pretty good. And also I have.
My.
Next five novel ideas laid out.
So what are the things that have actually gotten easier for you as you've gotten older? Are you a better writer? Is your craft better? I think so.
Just because I just made a conscious decision to pay more attention to the sentence rewrite sentence by sentence, rather than a little sloppy and character development. Much more attention to character development. I'll be doing an outline and I'll have a separate outline on this character. What makes this person tick? Why are they doing that? What are they like physically? What's their past? Who are they?
