Dr. Arthur Brooks argues men's left-brain dominance makes them think in black and white, while women's right-brain strength lets them see nuance. Together in marriage, he says, couples form one integrated brain, which is why people feel incomplete without a partner.

Women are a lot less binary than men are, which is one of the ways that we're so complimentary and so important that we be together. It's one of the reasons that people are often very unhappy when they're not partnered in this particular way, because there's not somebody to complete you in marriage, for example, you're supposed to complete each other. One of the reasons for that is that men have a much more developed left hemisphere of the brain, and that's more logical, binary, black and white thinking. And women have a much stronger right hemisphere of the brain, which is shades of gray, mystery, and meaning. And you got to have two hemispheres. That's how we're really linked together. And so one flesh, for me, as a scientist, one flesh means our brains. Our brains. We got one brain. We're one brain.
