Two people argue that burnout comes from toxic workplaces, not lack of hustle. Long hours, discrimination, underpayment, and loneliness are the real problems. Leaders have to build trust through consistent action, not tell people to choose happiness.
We need to protect happiness. That is crucial.
Unfortunately, in our hustle culture, most people, their identities are tied up in work. We are here to work, right? But if you go back to the orientation of we are here to serve others, create value, right?
You have a role to play in your lifelong happiness. You do have to consider that you go into an environment where it's toxic, where you're working 80 hours a week, where there's discrimination, where there's microaggressions, where you're feeling like you're underpaid and it's not equal to others, where you feel a loneliness or lack of community. All of those things are root causes of burnout and they cannot be solved with just choosing happiness. It's really consistency and frequency that equals trust, which improves happiness at work.
The world is evolving. There is nothing more needed than adaptability and resilience. And if it is one short way to increase your adaptability and resilience, it is through the science of happiness.
