Poor sleep makes leaders more abusive and their teams less engaged the next day. Research shows sleep quality predicts leadership behavior and ethical choices, suggesting these aren't fixed traits but fluctuate with rest.

When leaders have a bad night of sleep so poor quality, they show up the next day and immediately they're rated as more abusive in their leadership style by the people below them. And what we also see is that the engagement amongst those team members immediately declines. Interesting. So we often think of leaders as being either good or bad, abusive or not. But his study really showed no, it actually fluctuates, and it is highly correlated with the quality of sleep that leaders have. And we see the same thing for individuals. So not necessarily leaders, but anyone at work who doesn't have good sleep is starting to behave less ethically. So this is partially because they also sometimes lack moral awareness, so they don't quite see that the choices that they're making could have moral implications.
