Ashish Kothari shares three ways to lead better: treat health goals like performance goals and hold monthly team sessions on both, run regular pulse surveys with 8-12 questions to measure wellbeing, and spend 30-60 minutes monthly discussing team health to design interventions like meeting-free days or flexible schedules.

If you want to make well being a competitive edge for your team, then focus on taking these three measures. Number one, elevate health goals of your team at the same level as performance goals and make sure at least once a month you're engaging as a team to both address gap from where you need to be in performance and gaps that you need to close on your overall wellbeing. Second, measure data continuously at the same frequency. You can use a simple pulse survey based on eight to 12 questions. And number three, make sure you're at least spending 30 to 60 minutes every month having a conversation around the health of your team and individuals come up with ways at the individual level that people need to make sure they're operating at their best and some agreements collectively. For example, at the individual level, interventions might look like the autonomy and the flexibility that people might need to focus their time on what matters to them. It might be attending their child's baseball practice or dinner with friends. Collectively, it might mean norms around which days are meeting, free days, or email policy over weekends. If you have real conversations with data week to week, month to month, you too can improve well being scores for yourself and your team and truly operate at your best.
