Compassion means having hard conversations and holding people accountable. Niceness is just avoiding conflict to stay likable. The difference matters because one actually helps people, the other just makes you feel good.
Tell me the difference between compassion and just simply being nice.
So being nice will oftentimes avoid challenging conversations because nice is sweet, nice is pretty.
And at the core is I want you to like me, right? So please.
So oftentimes being nice is about something for me, not for you. Compassion is about speaking truth but doing it in a way That's respectful, that can even be kind. And for a compassionate leader, one of the ways that it devolves is you say to someone, it's not okay for you to do this, and I believe you can do better, and I want to and will help you do better. That is compassion. But you know what? It's not very nice to say, it's not okay for you to do this. That's harsh. It's hard. It's challenging. But compassionate leaders have the courage to be willing to say things need to change.
