Chapters
Good morning and welcome to the brand new orangerzek marketplace.
You can see it's moved, so I thought I'd do a quick video this.
Morning showing you its new location.
So first of all you can see.
Where it is right by the wheel and you can park in the breakwater car park at the va so it's nice and easy or you can park I guess where you used to park and then you just come up to the top floor of the car park and then you cross the walkway and you are into the market. So let's go and have a wander around and see what's new, what's different, what's the same, what's better and what's worse. Here we are, entrance to.
Market. The VA is building out a huge Granger Bay development. Think hotels, homes, even a new marina. And the old site of the market sits inside that project. So the market needed to move across the road while the build goes ahead. So the market's new home is the breakwater Deck, corner of Granger Bay Boulevard and Dock Road and a one minute walk from the old spot behind the breakwater parquet near the Cape wheel. Now it's opened on the 6th of December and I'm here recording that first weekend on a Sunday. The structures are purpose built and permanent. Apparently the plan is to return to the redeveloped Granger Bay site once construction is complete. So think this is a new long term home and maybe a shift back at some point in the future. Now it definitely feels bigger than the old market, but that might be because it has a larger timber hall with better flow, wider walkways and upgraded stalls. So it doesn't quite feel so crowded and you definitely feel a bit of extra breathing room. Now there are over a hundred traders here supporting over three and a half thousand livelihoods and it's dog friendly. And the hours are Saturday 8 till 2 and Sunday 8:30 till 2. And the night market runs in the evenings I think on a Wednesday, but also seasonally. Now I like the light, the airflow and the layout, but if crowds wear you out, arrive right at opening, do a lap for coffee and your breakfast and then maybe circle back for lunch. You'll get the vibe without the squeeze. So that's the story behind the move, what changed and how to visit. If you're coming to Cape Town, add this to your weekend. It's about 9:30 now while I'm doing this walk around, having had a cup of coffee and you can see that it is already starting to get more crowded. So if you don't want to be fighting with the masses and having long queues to buy your coffee and your bacon sandwich. Then make sure you get here at opening time, which is 8 o' clock on Saturday and 8:30 on a Sunday and that is half an hour earlier than it used to be.
So let's have a look around some.
Of the stalls selling everything from pastries and coffee and cooked breakfasts, lunches to artisanal products. One thing I really like about the market is that there is seating all over the place throughout the market. So you can see here there's lots of seating but there's also some really lovely seating overlooking the ocean as well, which is a big plus compared to the previous location of the market. So you can see now I'm just walking up to have a look at the seating up here. Now obviously if you want to get a great view of the ocean, you're going to need to get here early and have your seat, which is what we did when we arrived at 8:30.
So there you go, that's the market. Now I'm here. It's just after half past nine. I've been here since half past eight and it was busy when it opened at half past eight last Sunday, but by half past nine you can see how crazy it was. So my advice is definitely get here early and on a Saturday it opens at 8 o' clock and on a Sunday it opens at 8:30. So my advice is get here when it opens and you grab a seat with that lovely view overlooking the ocean. Plus you won't have to you for hours to buy a coffee or your breakfast. What a stunning location for the new market.
So there you go. That's the new market in five minutes. Now if you enjoyed this video, please do give us the thumbs up and make sure you've hit the subscribe so you get alerted when the new video goes live.
