Bernadette Boas of Shedding the Bitch Radio - Magic Mike Helps Women to Shed Bitches

In this July 17 2012 episode of Shedding the Bitch Radio, host Bernadette Boas welcomes branding expert Kelly Green and her dog Charlie to discuss how popular erotic media—specifically the film Magic Mike and the novel trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey—can serve as low‑guilt, low‑dependency tools for women to release self‑esteem‑damaging “bitches” such as insecurity, fear, and negative self‑talk. Bernadette links the discussion to her ongoing community campaign “Shifting 100,000 Hearts,” which rewards listeners for engaging with the show (sign‑ups, social shares, blog comments) with prizes ranging from her book Shedding the Corporate Bitch to mugs, t‑shirts, iPads, and airline tickets. Throughout the conversation she shares personal anecdotes (watching Magic Mike alone, a divorced woman at a dog park, her own age‑related insecurities) and observations about gendered objectification—arguing that the film’s focus on male bodies can empower women by giving them a guilt‑free fantasy that boosts confidence, reduces stress‑eating, and encourages flirtation. The episode also touches on related topics such as the potential Broadway adaptation of Magic Mike, the legacy of Chippendales as a brand, Match.com “stir” events, and daily mindfulness practices. Bernadette repeatedly urges listeners to use any entertaining medium as a mirror for self‑discovery, to celebrate their “riches” (strengths, achievements) while shedding the limiting “bitches.” The show closes with a reminder to tune in every Tuesday at noon Eastern, visit sheddingthebitch.com, and follow the community on Facebook and Twitter.
Chapters
Hello, hello, hello everyone! How is everyone doing? This is Bernadette Boas, and yes, you're listening to Shedding the Bitch Radio. And it is another steamy hot day in Atlanta, but I won't bore you with that because it's been for day after day after day for about 3 weeks now. But at least we got down to like the low 90s. So yes, I'm still perspiring while sitting in my own home, but at the same time, it's, it's not bad. It's, it's tolerable. And I think I think as the week goes on, it's actually going to get down even further. But I hope you are all doing well wherever you are. And if you're listening to this live, welcome. And also make note of the phone number you can call in and join in our conversation today: 1-818-572-2910. And if you just want to listen in and participate, you can do that by blogtalkradio.com/sheddingthebitch. And today is a very— another very interesting, fun show, and I had a topic that I wanted to discuss which kind of extended from our previous dialogues around how to shed the bitch with Fifty Shades of Grey. And many of you kind of chatted in with me and then emailed me, whether it was through LinkedIn or my Facebook page or the website, commenting how the book indeed, or the trilogy, is indeed kind of helping you let go some of those bitches of inhibitions that you might be or insecurities, or turning off the light, as someone— what one woman told me. And I continue to find it very interesting how things like Fifty Shades of Grey is helping you to kind of once and for all discover what's holding you up or what's keeping you from kind of really letting go and releasing a lot of those insecurities, fears, and negativities that you feel. And I found another, another medium, I think, that that you, you know, if you haven't already seen it, it's definitely catching a lot of attention as well. And that is Magic Mike the movie. So I want to definitely talk about that today. But before I do, I have a couple of guests in my studio today. One, you know Charlie. He's chopping away at a bone underneath my, at my feet. Hey Charlie, you gonna say hi today? Oh, look at him. If you can, if you're watching this on video, you, uh, he might pop into the, into the view at some point in time. And then I also have Kelly Green with me.
Hi Kelly.
Hi. She's with Insider Branding Secrets, and we have a secret forum going on today where we're going to be building out this campaign that we've been talking about for the last couple weeks, Shifting 100,000 Hearts. We might change the name of it. That doesn't— that's not what's important. What's important is we are creating an opportunity for all of you to come together, communicate, collaborate, share, engage, relate with one another, and really provide each other the opportunity to kind of just let it all go and shed the those bitches so you can find and create and accelerate those riches in life that you desire. So over the next couple weeks, you will see announcements. And even now, quite honestly, even now, if you were to go and sign up on sheddingthebitch.com to be a member, if you're responding to any of our questions of the week on our blog, if you are liking us on Facebook or following us on Twitter, your names are going into a drawing that I'm— that we're doing on a monthly basis. And I had a little bit of a bonus. Kelly doesn't know You don't know this yet. We haven't gotten this far in our little powwow today. But we had a bonus in June where I figured I started kind of telling you all about this campaign and therefore if you liked or shared or collaborated with us in the month of June, I put your name in a drawing and there's 5 of you that are getting Shedding the Corporate Bitch, my book, being sent out to you as we speak. So congratulations to all of you. But for the rest of you, keep in mind over the next coming months you'll have the opportunity to win some prizes. And whether it's the book or mugs, t-shirts, we're even talking iPads and airline tickets, who knows? And Kelly might like really cause me to go broke with some really big prizes, so stay tuned. So that's kind of all of our let's bring everybody up to date and welcome you to the show, but let's dive into talking Magic Mike. Hey, Kelly, did you see it?
I did not. No.
Any desire to see it?
Not really. I've heard good things about it though.
So, well, I won't totally blow it everybody's whistle. All I would tell you is this: if you need a fun girls— even your— there's a lot of guys there, we'll get to that in a second— but if you just need a fun afternoon or evening and maybe you do want to kind of like get yourself juiced up for your date, go see the movie. If you're looking for some great storyline and plot, stay home.
Right.
But yet it was fun. It was, it was a lot of fun, and I would recommend it. And I'll tell you that Channing Tatum is hot. Hot. I mean, that was— I mean, yes, these boys were smoking.
Now, did he used to be a dancer?
Yes, the story behind Channing is he used to be a dancer. He actually— what I did not know is that this story was based on him, was his story. He actually wrote it, if not produced it, but I don't know that. Steven Sonnenberg is the producer, I believe. Anyway, it is his story. He was a 18-year-old stripper. You can go online and see him stripping, and, um, and he's an unbelievable dancer. And so I guess he just decided to take this on. Now, to that point, and then we're going to move on to why Magic Mike is, is kind of shedding your bitches, ladies. But, um, also this gentleman, I guess on Entertainment Tonight or something, came out saying he's in jail, and he came out saying he's actually Magic Mike and he taught Channing everything that he knew, and blah blah blah blah blah, whatever. Yeah, anybody looking for 15 minutes of fame or, you know, to sue somebody for something that they produced. But anyway, it is, it's a lot of fun. It's a long, it's a long movie in that between the, between the stripping, there's just nothing there. So you're just kind of like, okay, can I see? Right. And, you know, ladies, we talked about it with Fifty Shades of Grey, you know, let's not be prudes. Let's really admit that We need some stimulation in our lives. You know, women work extremely hard. We take care of everybody else. We don't take care of ourselves. And we need that kind of that opportunity to just go and have fun. And that's exactly what you, what you get with no guilt. You know, and this was actually a quote that I found this morning, but no guilt and no dependencies. Like, you know, you're not going out and drinking or doing drugs or some other form of addiction. You're just like reading erotica books. Books and movies, which— what? What?
I said no harm.
No harm. And the thing is though, we haven't had those mediums. You know, the guys have been going out to strip clubs forever and a day. And Chippendales, I mean, I don't know if they're all passé or not. I bet you they're gonna come back though. Yeah, they're gonna— I don't—
you think? I would think so.
I would definitely think they're going to come back. And then they're— I just heard this morning they're taking Magic Mike. Oh, this is great, ladies. Okay, and then see, you're benefiting from this, and I get a lot of guys listening in and/or calling in, actually, and then listening in the archive, and they'll email me with various questions because they love this dialogue of helping women to kind of get rid of all their insecurities and fears, and in this case, inhibitions, because it's only benefiting them.
Right.
So I think, you know, at first they were saying with like Fifty Shades of Grey and now with Magic Mike that it's all the girls going to the show and the men are all upset. It's kind of like, well, wait a minute, you know. And yet, they're going and getting primed. Because I'm telling you, I'm single. Just as an FYI to everybody out there. And I walked out of there like, oh geez, and I went by myself. Nothing like doing research for your radio show and getting to go see Naked Men. I'm sorry, but you know, that was fun. So, but I was first surprised that, I was concerned at first because I was the only one in the movie theater. Like 10 minutes before the show started. So I was kind of like, oh wow, this is interesting. And then it was packed. It was sold out. And I was very interested to see that there was a lot of men. I would say there was like 30% of the room was men. Now, probably 10% of that 30%, maybe 20% of that 30% were gay men, couples coming to see, come on. If you're a gay man, wouldn't you want to see Channing Tatum? And Matt McConaughey, oh my God. He played the best sleaziest, Never ever, ever. But anyway, ladies, it was a very guilt-free, dependency-free movie. And the bottom line is this: a lot of you, especially when we were talking Fifty Shades of Grey, kind of said, you know, I didn't— at first I didn't want to read it. I actually had one caller who said, I didn't want to read it because I didn't want it to stir up they were kind of afraid to confront what kind of feelings they might get, which I found very interesting. Now, I've heard that from multiple people in various ways, and it doesn't vary from whether it's a single woman or a married woman.
I would definitely see that in married women.
Me too, but not in the single woman. Yeah, but I think in the single woman It could be because of the fact that— are you coming to say hello, Charlie?
Come here.
It could be— it's okay. It could be the fact that for the single woman too who maybe is getting older, like, you know, everybody knows, I talk about it since I turned 50, you know, turning 50, competing with younger women physically, not mentally or emotionally, but at least physically, and just kind of starting to get a sense of insecurity about how you look in the bedroom. Or on top of a car, or wherever you choose to have fun. But, um, so I think that's where she was coming from.
Okay.
I think it was, you know, she was coming from that place because it was— it's sometimes girls will tell me it's easier from a self-esteem perspective to be single than to put themselves in that situation again.
Right.
And I'm like, no, no, turn off the lights, you know what I mean? Don't be afraid. Come on, ladies, shedding those bitches. Remember, shed those bitches. You know, don't be insecure or inhibited around that because at the same time they're aging too, unless you're going after 30-year-olds, which 30-year-olds I'm open, you know, but you know, unless you're going after that. Right now, the married women, what I found interesting about that was because like you said, I wasn't surprised But at the same time, it's sad. I was sad. It's like the woman who's, you know, the married woman who said to me, "What do you mean I should be setting goals for myself?" And I'm like, "What? What? What?" You know, because especially married women, especially married women with kids, maybe married women with kids who stay at home and have a husband who works out of the house, you know, full-time. They definitely don't take care of themselves. They don't think about what is it that I'm supposed to have. They think about everybody else but themselves. And here, you know, she was commenting that, well, what if, you know, all of a sudden these feelings get drummed up and maybe my partner's not responsive to it, you know, and then there's rejection for the first time. And maybe a rejection that they've had before because, you know, the husband doesn't want sex or whatever the case might be, but now they're you know, they get themselves on a high and then they get pulled down. I just found that very interesting. Now, I'm thinking Magic Mike, because it's in a public forum, like when you read a book, you know, although a couple of my sisters read it in front of other people. Now, I'm not saying, I'm not saying that they should be responding in any tangible physical way while they're reading the book. Oh, but I'm sorry, but— and did you read the book Fifty Shades of Grey?
No, I haven't. I haven't read it. Okay.
So I'm going to have to break Kelly in here.
No, I'm kidding.
Yeah. No, no, no. Just joking. No pressure here.
No movie, no book.
No movie, no book. Well, and again, I was very curious on Fifty Shades of Grey, again, from a business perspective, as sad as that is. I mean, I definitely wanted to read it because, of course, everybody's curious about it.
Right.
But then when I realized that, yes, in fact, that book was helping women shed their inner shed their insecurities, their low self-esteem. They were actually getting confidence. They were building up strong confidence and boldness about themselves and fearlessness. You know, and therefore the sex toy stores are blowing out of certain things. And now Magic Mike supposedly is helping women, even not men, they're not doing it, but the women are going out and buying their men the leather vests, thongs, you know, just, you know, the costumes, you know. And so why not spice up your love life by putting a little characters in there, you know. And so I thought the movie was very interesting, but a couple of things that I read this morning in regards to it is, well, of course, oh, people are arguing that that the movie's objectifying men. Now, ooh, come on! Really?
Yes! After all the years we've been objectifying men? Yes!
Yes!
That's the point of the movie?
And you know what I say to that? Go for it!
Yes!
Bring it on, you know? Continue doing it. I mean, you know, and one thing, Kelly, if you didn't listen to our show on Fifty Shades of Grey, we actually had a couple because so many people were asking me about it. But we were talking about the fact that there was a side of people reading Fifty Shades of Grey even that found it to be very submissive, like it really objectified a woman and demeaned her and it was about a contract. I'm like, did you read the book or did you just like, you know, skim the back page? Because yes, was there a contract involved? Yes. But did she sign it? And agree to it?
No. Okay.
You know, everything that she did in it was by choice.
Okay.
Not forced choice, but by choice. Now, was it blind love choice or lust, whatever you want to call it? Maybe. So we kind of had a lot of dialogue and debate around that part of the subject. So here, when I hear that one movie in centuries has come out objectifying men, it's kind of— yeah, it's really silly. And all I say is Good for you, Holly Wood.
Right, exactly.
We want more objectifying of men. Because it does stir up a lot of opportunities for women to finally, you know, put their sexuality out there. And not even that, but just find confidence and boldness, like I said earlier. And they are saying that women are the new men. They're becoming— well, and I can see that. I can see that. Women women are finally kind of standing up and saying, I want a place to go and have fun and let myself go. And guess what, honey? When I come home— yeah, not feel bad about it. And when I come home, guess what? You benefit.
Right, right, right.
Oh, and what I would— so what I was saying earlier, and I, I think I jumped off of it. So I heard this morning that Magic Mike is being turned into a Broadway play. I can't— yo, well, I can see like a cabaret Well, what they're going to do is they're going to set it up in an environment that's like a nightclub. Oh, as if women are coming out and they're going to be part of the show. Like, if— I don't want to blow the movie, but if you've been to a strip— have you been to a strip joint? Okay, so they bring people, they bring women up on stage, you know, and so that the movie, you know, leverage that because I'm sure every strip club brings the woman up on stage. That's the whole, you know, right? Um, and so that's what they want to create me from this Hollywood or from this Broadway show perspective. I'm there. All I can tell you is I'm there. And I think they have enough strippers candidates around the country to do it in every city. Absolutely.
Yeah.
Although, yeah, yeah. Although you don't want it to get too cheesed down. I think Chippendales had its day and then I think it fell off because of the fact that it just got too over commercializing, right?
I mean, they could be the new version of the Chippendales.
Correct. But I do— well, Chippendales is such a good— I mean, you're a branding person. Kelly is an insider, branding secrets expert, you know. And Chippendales is such a great brand. They might have to fix it because a lot of women, I do think, look at it in a cheesy way.
Yeah, and that's what I'm saying. The Magic Mike version could be less cheesy and more geared geared towards younger females, or females who are more freeing, right, and not as inhibited as shedding the bitch, chipping it.
How about that, right? We're sitting here today, you know, trying to kind of bring you more, uh, programs and opportunities to engage with us. So, uh, maybe this is one of them. Yeah, yeah.
I've been asked to have Shedding the Bitch on Broadway myself, so parties Shedding the Bitch Party. Yeah, there you go.
Yes, exactly. Oh my gosh, we can have strippers at our Shedding the Bitch Party. How many of you would come? Come on, admit it.
I mean, what better way to clear your—
shed your inhibitions than through that. So I think what's really kind of cool is another study— this is not a study, but a report I read this morning— is not only is this no guilt, no dependencies, no, you know, no addiction type of fun that women are having right now. But it's also a remedy for stress eating or drinking. So here they're going and they're reading these books, the trilogy books, they're getting into Magic Mike, and it's also kind of allowing them to release their stress and not do it in a bottle or in a, you know, chocolate cake. I'm going to have to disagree with that. About that little comment because I sat there eating popcorn and a big fat Diet Coke while watching the movie, so I'm not sure about that.
Wait, they're saying that by engaging in the book and the movie, it helps you, what, curb your appetite?
Yep, it's a remedy for stress eating or drinking.
Hmm.
What do you think about that? I don't think so.
I don't think so because I can just see my mindless eating while you're watching the movie or reading the book.
I absolutely agree.
Sipping wine. Yeah, yeah, drinking.
Well, especially reading that book. Yeah, you're drinking, you're having a drink or two. I'm just saying, I'm just saying. But I do love the idea, and I'm going to continue to stress this and talk about it and get your feedback on it and whatnot. And please, if you ever do have feedback and comments whether now or after we've, you know, uploaded the video and the audio, then feel free to go to shedinthepitch.com and provide your comments. We always kind of highlight the radio show in one of our blog posts. So you can do it there, or you can go out on Facebook or Twitter and make a comment, agree, disagree, shed some light on some other, you know, kind of concepts or ideas that you have around the subject. But I just love the idea that there are things coming about that are allowing women to express themselves and allowing them to just kind of say, you know what, whether it's for 15 minutes of reading or it's an hour and a half to 2 hours in a movie theater, just kind of letting yourself go and forgetting kind of those bitches that are consuming your heart and head from really really being open and being free and being bold and fearless to pursue what it is that you want. And we always want to, we always want to keep that in mind as we try to help each other, because that's what Shedding the Bitch community is about, is working together to really provide the platforms and the events and the programs and the shows like this and in the future are television episodes that we'll have online. But we want to just provide you a place where you can come and share with each other and get advice not only from me but other experts, other people that you can relate to, and really kind of find ways to discover, confront, and shed those bitches of insecurity or fear, inhibition, negativity, doubt, uncertainty. What's yours? Mine has been low self-esteem every once in a while, unsure, you know, not a great feeling of self-worth, high value of self-worth. But once I kind of let that all go, today I'm just, I'm a very happy woman. And I just kind of take day by day and I look at myself. And we talk about one way that you could leverage Magic Mike and you can leverage Fifty Shades of Grey or any other form of opportunity that you're given to dig in and kind of look at why you're reacting the way you are to something. I mean, if you really have fun reading Fifty Shades of Grey or going and seeing that movie, think about why. Like, what's really kind of getting you excited? Not just the naked men, right?
But they— that—
but, you know, it's hard not to. But like, think about why, you know, why I walked out there yesterday Yesterday, here's an admission for you, I walked out of there yesterday and I thought, you know, I'm a pretty good dancer. I need to polish up my little high heels. You know, I won't use the word that they call those big, big tall pumps, but most women know what I'm talking about. And, you know, and get my flirt on. Oh, I was watching a commercial the other day, and I'm sorry, you're going to have to forgive me, I am single, but I was watching— this commercial, it's Match.com. We've talked about my online dating experiences in the past. I could write a book about that. I did do a comedy skit about it. Yes, I did a comedy skit at the Punchline all about my— yes, all about my online dating experiences. But so Match.com now has these stir events, they're called. Yeah, you've seen them? And they're events to bring Match.com members together so they cannot just do it online, but they can do it face-to-face. And I was curious, so I looked for Atlanta events. There isn't any here, ladies and gentlemen. You just have to keep doing it online. But it's just those kind of things that are really allowing men and women to kind of just put themselves out there. And I'm telling you, you're gonna walk out of Magic Mike whether single or made it up or spoused up or partnered up or whatever and you're gonna want to get your flirt on.
Yes, you are. Yes, you are.
And that's good. Yeah, that's very good, especially if you're shy or insecure or you haven't had a mate in a while, or even a sex partner. I was talking to this one woman at the dog park. She's divorced, recently divorced, and I won't mention her name because she said she was gonna listen today. But, um, and we were talking and she said, you know, I haven't even been able to think about I haven't thought about men or dating or even sex since I've been divorced. And I said, really, not even sex? I mean, you don't have to go and get married again or have a serious boy— you know, that's the nice thing about being 50. You kind of let it all go. You just kind of let it all go and not worry about whatever other people think. But anyway, so, all right, so today what I want you to really think about and walk away with is is consider these opportunities. Whether you go see Magic Mike, you read Fifty Shades of Grey, it doesn't matter. Just find those opportunities to really learn something about yourself. We talk about shedding your bitches but honoring your riches at the same time. You know, you always look at, you know, your strengths and your attributes and your talents and your achievements, what we call riches. And leverage those to help you overcome and deal with those insecurities, those fears, those negative mindsets, those low self-esteems, or the bad self-talk, the ugly self-talk that you give yourself. And think about what your life would be like. You know, when you walk out of that movie theater or you put down that book, what did you feel? You felt excited, you felt pumped up, you felt like you wanted to get your flirt on. And therefore, hold on to that. And when you start shedding and peeling away those things, those ugly things from your heart and your head, you're gonna find that confidence, you're gonna find that boldness, you're gonna find the fearlessness and those other things that allow you to really pursue life fully and completely. And one step at a time, little bits and pieces, and you're going to eventually get whatever it is that you want and you pursue and you take action on. So use those opportunities, go and have some fun. Even take your boyfriend. Like I said, there's guys there. And take your mate, you know, because I do get some, you know, as a result of my Pain and Joy characters, Kelly, I have a gay following, I'm proud to say.
Okay.
Um, drag queens that I want to hire for my Pain and Joy. We'll talk. I have to tell her now that, you know, she's like my branding secret. The Insider Branding Secrets of Kelly Green. Look her up. Anyway, so that's what I want you to think about is find those opportunities, whether it's meditating first thing in the morning. We talk a lot here about kind of some exercises you can do first thing in the morning to kind of ground yourself and get your head and your heart and your body on right in order for you to go out in the world feeling you know, wonderful and joyful and rich to just throughout the day when those little ugly voices creep in, find the opportunities, find the experiences, remember, go back to that little joy that a movie or a book or a, you know, a chat with a friend gave you and allow that joy, allow that laughter or excitement or exhilaration Overcome that ugly voice that might be consuming you. Alright, so that's what I want to leave you with today. But join us every Tuesday at noon Eastern time for Shedding the Bitch Radio. Check in at sheddingthebitch.com for all of our announcements regarding our great campaign that we're going to have to bring you all together so you can collaborate and communicate and create a community amongst yourselves that will allow you to shift from bitch to rich.
