Rich Tip with Bernadette Boas - Limiting Beliefs

In this short coaching video, transformation and success coach Bernadette Boas explains how limiting beliefs—negative self‑talk such as “I’m not good enough” or “I’m too old”—hold people back from fully leveraging their skills. She outlines a concrete journaling exercise: write each limiting belief in a first column, then in a second column list factual evidence that disproves it (e.g., education, experience, awards). In a third column, formulate a new, empowering decision based on the proven truth (e.g., “I will charge premium rates because I am an expert”). Boas recommends spending about ten minutes each morning running through this process to rewire mindset before tackling the day’s tasks. She concludes by directing viewers to her website, balloffirecoaching.com, for additional blog posts, podcast episodes, and personal support.

Hello everyone, happy, happy, happy day! Today we are talking limiting beliefs and new decisions. Uh, now obviously being a transformation and success coach, 80% of the work that I do, if not more, is all around mindset versus even skill set. Because until you get your mindset right and in an empowered, confident state, your skill set is never going to be fully leveraged, optimized, and what I'll even say, exploited to your benefit. All right, so, um, the one thing we need to be okay with is the fact that every single one of us have limiting beliefs at one time or another, at one time of the day, of the week, of the month, of the year. Everyone, and I mean even the most successful you know, uh, rich, whatever you kind of revere and look up to and respect. Everyone has limiting beliefs. And so what are limiting beliefs looking like? They're looking like things like, I'm not good enough, I'm not smart enough, I don't have the education, I don't have the experience or the expertise, um, I don't have the, the money and the resources, I don't have a network, I'm too old, I'm too thin, I'm too overweight, I'm too this, I'm too that. It's all that— those negative, uh, beliefs around yourself that really limit you from getting out there and taking risks and going after new things and getting uncomfortable and going after the goals and the dreams you have for yourself. All right, so one way you could begin, uh, each and every day focusing 80% on your mindset, 20% on your skill set is very simply acknowledge what those limiting beliefs are. Grab a journal and just start scribbling out what is— what is it? What do you feel about yourself, think about yourself, say to yourself, feel about yourself? Um, good, bad, or indifferent, but right now we're looking at limiting beliefs. Write them all down, and it's just for you. So, uh, it could be scary, it could be painful, it could be embarrassing, it could be you know, kind of negative. But I want you to kind of write it all out and, and try to get it into where it's like, you know, almost like a one-liner, you know, a bulleted one-liner. Because then what I want you to do is, um, on another column of that same page, for each one of those limiting beliefs, I want you to be very truthful and acknowledge how your limiting belief is not real, it's not true. So for instance, if you have a limiting belief about the fact that, you know, who would do business with me? Who would engage me and pay me money? I'm not smart enough. I don't have a degree. I don't have certification, so forth and so on. So if that's your limiting belief, I want you to prove to yourself that it's not true by putting in the next column the fact that, well, wait, you know, well, I did graduate from high school. I did graduate from college. And even if I didn't do that, I've gained experience on the job for, you know, X amount of years. I have done this project and that project. I've got this award and this accomplishment and this acknowledgement. And I have, you know, I have been able to, to get this, this, this, and this as a result of my skill set, as a result of my talent, my expertise, my accomplishments, my experiences, right? So you're proving to yourself that that limiting belief is not true. So then where new decisions come into play is then I want you to make a new decision about the truth you just discovered and the, and the way that it's proved that your limiting belief is not true and should not exist. So if you're saying to yourself, I'm not, you know, smart enough, good enough, expert enough for anybody to want to hire me or pay for me, you prove to yourself with all of this evidence that it's not true. Well, then the new decision is that I have the expertise to engage my perfect client at a, at a, you know, significant rate because I am an expert, I am credible, I am, uh, proven. You get what I'm saying? So another one, limiting belief, is I'm too old to get, you know, to find another job and to get the perfect job that I want at the at the— still at the price that I feel I deserve. And so that's your limiting belief. Your new belief— or I'm sorry, your proof of that is that you, you know, maybe you've done research, maybe you've asked colleagues and friends and whatnot for the fact that yes, there, you know, there are these positions that are open. You fit the qualifications, you fit the responsibilities and the skill set that they're looking for. You probably don't know the rate at the time, but at the same time, there's— you, you write down that there's great benefits to someone being more seasoned and expert and experienced, um, as a result of your age. And therefore you're proving to yourself that that limiting belief that you're too old and no one's going to hire you and pay you what you want is not true. And then your new decision is going to be, um, I am going to find the perfect job that is, uh, is perfect for my skill set at the at the salary and the, uh, the rate and the benefits that I want and I deserve, and I am not going to accept anything less. See where I'm going here? So you're trying to acknowledge your limiting belief, prove it to be wrong, and then make a new decision about it. If you take 10 minutes every morning to even just think through these things— what are going to— what limiting belief is going to get in your way you know, that day, prove it to be wrong, and then make a new decision about it, your life will change. Okay, so I wanted to leave that with you today. And, um, as at the same time, always, you know, check out ball of fire coaching.com and, um, be sure to look for our blog posts and my podcast episodes and, uh, join in and, you know, let me know what you're thinking, what you're dealing with, and what I can help you with.
