Bill demonstrates the side plank press, a core exercise that combines spinal stabilization with a banded chest press. Your core stabilizes reflexively on the opposite side when you move, making this movement effective for building strength. He shows the full version and a regression on your knees.

Hi, I'm Bill from Beyond Fitness Online, and today I want to show you one of my favorite core exercises. Now, when we think about the musculature of the core, it's important to understand that its first job is to actually stabilize the spine. So when we're talking about the abs and the lower back and all of those other muscles in there, if you cannot stabilize your spine with those, it's going to be very difficult to do any other movement. Now, more particularly, when we think about how the brain works, when we move on one side of the body, there's a reflexive stabilization through the core on the other side of the body to keep you from falling over. So we're going to combine those 2 ideas into one exercise here, and I call it a side plank press. So what we're going to do is we're going to add a chest press using a band while we're in a side plank. Let me show you right here. Begin by going up into a plank and holding a band that is fastened to something stationary behind you. Go into an extension of the elbow and press that band in front of you. If that's too challenging, you can drop the knees to the ground and go from a modified plank. I hope you found this exercise helpful. It's a very useful exercise when you're really trying to build core stability. If you haven't already, go ahead and please subscribe to my channel. I post new updates every Friday.
