Bill from Beyond Fitness Online shows how to activate your neck extensors by interlacing your hands behind your head, pushing back for 10-15 seconds while looking at a distant point. Immediately retest your squat, row, or pull-up and feel the difference in strength.

Hi, I'm Bill from Beyond Fitness Online, and today I want to show you a little trick that will help you to get more strength through your extension movements. Now, your extension movements would be anything where you're opening up a joint, so extending an elbow, we're going head up or back, where if we're going to squat, if we're doing a row or a pull-up, those are all examples of extension. Now, if you want to get more strength, more balance out of those, then this is going to be great for you. So you're going to do 2 things at once. I'm going to show you right here. The first thing you're going to do is you're going to use your neck and activate all of your extensor muscles. So you're going to put your hands behind your head right here like this, and you're going to push your head into it. Now, we're not trying to push the head up. We're trying to push the head back into the hands. So I've got my fingers interlaced here, just right here, and push back. And you're going to hold that for about 10 to 15 seconds, putting good pressure in there. Now while you're doing that, you're going to want to have a visual target that's off in the distance and just kind of let the eyes gaze outward. It's okay to let that vision get a little bit blurry or see double, but you just want to let that relax. After about 15 or 20 seconds, you're going to relax and come out of that, and then you're going to retest or try out those extension movements, and they should start to feel a little bit stronger.
