Functional core exercise for better balance and strength

Bill demonstrates a functional marching exercise that improves balance and core strength by mimicking everyday walking. You can use dumbbells, soup cans, or just your arms, and adding head turns stimulates your vestibular system, which helps with vertigo and balance issues.

Hi, I'm Bill from Beyond Fitness Online. Today I wanna show you one of my favorite core exercises. Now, this core exercise is very functional because it really translates into how we move throughout the world, and it really helps with building better posture, better balance, and really building core musculature all around the core— front, back, and sides— and really translates well into how we walk. So this exercise is a marching exercise, and we're going to be holding different weights. Now, if you don't have weights available, you can do this with various bands or other— anything that has any kind of weight to it. So you can use cans of soup if you want to start really light. You can even just use your arms. And the 3 things we're going to be paying most attention to here are: 1, making sure we have good posture; 2, where do we want to put our arms and hands; And 3, which direction do we want to put our head? And all of those things can be combined in different combinations to really change up this exercise. So let me show you a couple variations right here. To begin this exercise, place the weight symmetrically up by your shoulders and try marching in place. Make sure you're maintaining good posture while you do this. If you want to make this more challenging, lift the weight higher up. The higher it is from the ground, the harder this will be. You can also do this in an asymmetric fashion where you have one arm up and one arm down lower. Try marching from there. You can do this in various different ways. If you want to add to this, try putting a weight further away from your body out to the side or out in front. Again, marching with good posture. You can add head position to this by turning your head in any direction. Try turning your head left and right or up or down or any combination thereof. In this example, I'm looking up and to the right. You can also couple these together where you put the arms in different positions and And the head in a different position as well. I hope you found that interesting. This is a really great exercise when you're trying to change things up. You will be amazed at when you hold this weight up here, how much more challenging it is just to maintain your posture. And then as you add in different head positions, it really can stimulate your vestibular system in different ways. And you can use this as a vestibular exercise because so many people have underlying vestibular issues and don't even know it. And then some people have, Vertigo and other symptoms of vestibular problems, and this is a great way to both strengthen your core and correct all those things at once. So give it a try. Let me know in the comments below what you think and which way worked best for you. If you haven't already, please subscribe. I post new updates every Friday. And until next time, live healthy.
