Improve your balance and core strength with this exercise

Bill demonstrates the bird-dog exercise and three band-resisted variations to strengthen your core and posterior chain. The movement targets glutes, hamstrings, lower and mid-back, and spinal stabilizers while improving balance through vestibular stimulation.

Hi, I'm Bill from Beyond Fitness Online. Today, I wanna show you a variation of some core exercises, and we are going to use the bird dog as the baseline. Now, if you don't know what the bird dog is, I'm gonna show you that here in just a second, but the bird dog is a great exercise for working all of the posterior chain, or the backside of your body. It's great for the glutes, the hamstrings, the lower and mid-back. All the spinal stabilizers, and that's all really important to build more stabilization and strength through your core and your spine, which also in turn helps with your balance because it does stimulate the vestibular system a little bit, and it does so much more for you. But what we can do then is start to add variations with some lateral resistance, and we're going to use a band for that, and I'm going to show you that right here. To perform the bird dog, you're going to start off on your hands and knees. In this case, we will use the right arm and the left leg as we extend them out and then bring the elbow and the knee together underneath the body. You can progress this to using a band in that right hand that is pulling you laterally, still trying to maintain that same form. You can repeat this also by having a band around that left leg, and you extend the leg and then bring it back underneath you. The third version, which is hard to see here, there is a band wrapped around my waist and pulling me laterally as I continue to try the same movement. You can do this on either side. So as you can see, there's a lot of different ways to do this. There's the band in the hand, there's a band around the waist, there's a band around the legs. You can even do any combination thereof, and you can pull them in different directions. So really, the, the options are endless here, and you can really start to feel the core muscles really engage and get going. So give that a try. Let me know below in the comments how that went for you. If you haven't already, please subscribe. I post new updates every Friday. And until next time, live healthy.
