A patient's back pain when standing up might come from a brainstem glitch. The vestibular nerve sends balance signals to the region that controls spinal extension. If that connection misfires, your body can't extend properly, and your back hurts.
So we assessed his back pain. We already had an idea of what was going to hurt when he stands up from his desk. Extension was hurting anytime he's trying to extend. So we were thinking, okay, extension is a part of the brainstem that is in the middle of the brainstem. That part of your brainstem helps control that movement. One of the other things that feeds into that part of the brainstem is actually the nerve that your vestibular system communicates to the brain with. So we're thinking now there's probably a disconnect there somehow.
