This is how to improve your balance from awful to awesome

Bill from beyondfitnessonline.com walks through six progressive balance exercises, starting with feet together and advancing to single-leg stance with eyes closed. He stresses that adaptations are surface-specific, so master stable ground first before moving to unstable surfaces like balance boards.

Hi, I'm Bill from beyondfitnessonline.com, and today I want to talk to you about how to progress your balance training. Now, balance is something that's super important, especially as we get older, and you don't want to let up on that type of training because you don't want to get into a situation where you have to try and catch up. But if you're already behind and need to improve your balance, this Still works and it just takes a little more time. Now there's a whole progression to your balance and what we want to do is go through this. It starts with having your feet on a stable surface. Now oftentimes people tell me, well, if I want to get better at my balance, I've got to get onto an unstable surface. Your body adapts to whatever you do the most. So if you're balancing on an unstable surface, you're going to get better at balancing on an unstable surface. But that's not necessarily going to translate into balancing better on the floor. So what we want to do is do everything we do on a stable surface, and down the road, if you want to start progressing into unstable surfaces and start training for that, that's totally fine, but it's not going to translate into better balance in general. So right here, I'm going to show you a few different progressions for your balance, and you can give them a try. So the very first thing you will do is stand with your feet all the way together with your eyes open. Now from there, you can progress that to eyes closed. If you see excessive swaying or you have trouble balancing, then you'll want to regress. From here, you can go to what's called a sharpened Romberg's position where you're heel to toe, and again with eyes open or eyes closed to make it even more challenging. The 3rd level would be to stand on one leg and try to maintain that balance, again with the eyes open, and then the next level would be to close the eyes. To take it a step further from there, you would go back to your original Romberg's position and start to turn your head into different positions by rotating, tilting, or looking up or down. Then you can do the same thing on one foot. And again, all of this can be done with eyes open or eyes closed. I hope you found this video helpful.
