What side of the body should you work on? Find out here!!!

Bill demonstrates a balance test to find which side of your vestibular system is weaker. Stand on one leg with eyes closed, note which direction you fall, then do a head-turn exercise toward that side to retrain your balance.

Hi, I'm Bill from beyondfitnessonline.com. Now today I'm going to talk to you about a test that you can do for yourself that will determine if you have an imbalance from left side to right side. Specifically, what we're going to be testing is your vestibular system. Now the vestibular system is really important not just for balance, But it's also important for controlling your sympathetics, so your blood pressure, your heart rate, and so on. It also plays a role in how you stabilize through the spine, through the neck, in the shoulders. It plays a huge role in gut health. It plays a role in plantar fasciitis. There's a huge list of things that the vestibular system is involved in, and with most of my clients, I do at least some level of work on the vestibular system with them Even if they don't have vertigo. Now, the reason I do that is because of all those things that are controlled. You may have a low-level vestibular issue, and if you correct it, your, your progress in the gym and your health will just skyrocket, especially if you're stuck at a plateau and you can't quite get over it. So what I'm going to do here is I'm going to show you this test. It's a balance test in a sense, and then I will explain it to you as we go through the test. What it is you're looking for. Now, it might be beneficial for you to video yourself or have somebody watch you because sometimes it's hard to tell it on when you're doing the test what's actually happening because your eyes will be closed. In addition to that, if you do have any balance issues, make sure that you're safe. You don't want to fall over and hurt yourself, so you can either have somebody there to spot you or have something there to grab onto should you lose your balance. So without further ado, here's the test and what you should do about it. So the very first thing you want to do is figure out what stance you want to be doing this in. So we're going to test your balance. We start with feet together, and then from there, if you feel that you've got good stability, you can go to what's called Romberg's, which is a heel-to-toe position. And if you still feel good there, you can go up onto one foot. Now, if you feel like all of those are easy to hold and you have no balance issues, Then you can restart from feet together with your eyes closed. You can do Rombergs with your eyes closed, and you can do single leg with your eyes closed. If you choose Rombergs or single leg, you'll want to make sure you try both sides. Now from there, you're going to choose which position was challenging but doable. So for me, I chose Rombergs. I stand up tall, I get my balance, And I'm going to close my eyes for up to 30 seconds. Now you can see here that with my right foot forward, I fell to the right. I switched my feet. I get my balance again with my eyes open. Close the eyes. Hold it as long as you can. And again, I fell to the right. This tells me that it's my right vestibular system that's a little bit underactive. So I'm going to go back into that position with my eyes open. I'm going to use 2 targets. The first target is the camera. The second target is a dot on the wall. I'm going to open my eyes and look from the camera and quickly turn my head to the right, looking for that second dot. I'm going to stare at it for about 2 seconds, close my eyes, and slowly bring my head back forward. You're going to want to do this about 3 to 5 repetitions. Now, after you've done this, you're going to go back to your most challenging position. So again, for me it was Romberg's, and you're going to close your eyes and see if your balance has improved. As you can see here, for me it has. I hope you found that helpful. Leave me a comment below and let me know how the test went for you and if the head turn exercise was helpful at all and if it helped correct your test at all. And if you have any other questions, please leave them below. And until next time, live healthy.
