Your muscles stay tense all the time because your brain uses your vestibular system to sense gravity and automatically adjust tension to keep you upright. It's not something you control. It's how you don't fall over.

Muscles have a certain amount of tension in them at all times. Now, if we're going to flex those muscles to move, that's one thing, but in our general day when we're sitting or standing and not even thinking about it, there's a certain amount of tension in those muscles. That tension is set by your brain, and your brain is doing that based on the information it's getting from other systems like the vestibular system. The vestibular system tells our brain which way gravity is pulling us, And then as a result, the brain says, so we don't fall over, I want this much tension in these little muscles here, and that keeps us upright with good posture.
