Technical employees often fail in sales roles without training or natural inclination for cold calling. Companies should start them with warmer leads and structured enablement, then develop both new business and account growth skills over time.
Another kind of my perspective failure mode we have seen in building these teams is taking people who are extremely tenured on the technical side and then trying to get them into a go to market role without that training. And I've seen it more in smaller companies where maybe they don't have the resources and so they're sort of half in and out and they put them into an account manager role. They have no formal sales training, you know, and they really struggle. This is obviously a leading question, but you know, like, should people be doing that as they're trying to build these divisions or should they be taking a different approach to enablement?
Well, most people that are trying to build a division, they don't have any accounts, there's no account. Yeah, fair role. Right.
Yeah.
So that's similar to how things were with most of the companies I've been with is that you got to make sure that they've got enough in their DNA to be nobody is born, you know, being a natural cold caller. Nobody comes out, you know, the womb saying, man, I nothing I could rather do than be a cold caller. Right. But you're going to have to figure out some ways that you can help them with warmer leads than just dials.
Right?
Yeah, so that's, that's helpful. But eventually you want them to build their book of business to where then they are going to become more of a farmer than a hunter. And so you want to make sure that there's both of those skill sets that you feel like that are part of who they are or that you could teach them.
