A contractor shares how a million dollars in marketing mistakes taught them to understand financials and bookkeeping well enough to work effectively with professionals. The lesson: learn enough to ask the right questions and set proper expectations.
As a contractor, I realized that I have to know all these things. I don't have to do them, but I have to know and talk the talk about marketing, about financials, about bookkeeping and everything so that I can ask the right questions, have the right expectations with the professionals I work with. And I, like I said, I used to just shit on the professionals and be like, these guys don't know what they're doing. So I try to go back and educate myself. And I did that through, I would say, I don't know if it's millions, but at least over over a million in marketing mistakes. And that was the education that I needed to get to understand how it works and be able to ask the right questions.
