In this short talk, Bobby Moesta shares a lesson from his mentor, Dr. W. Edwards Deming, that every problem actually consists of two distinct challenges. The first is the obvious task of fixing the immediate issue. The second, less obvious but equally critical, is figuring out how to prevent the same problem from recurring by putting appropriate systems in place. Moesta stresses that great engineers and innovators not only solve problems but also design preventive systems, embodying a proactive, systems‑thinking mindset.

One of my mentors, Dr. Deming, would always say that every time you have a problem, you really have 2 problems. And the thing that's really interesting here is that we all know kind of the one problem. When I have a problem, I gotta solve it. But, but the other problem, which most people don't actually understand, is they need to know how to prevent it from happening again. And so every time you actually have to go off and solve the problem, you have to figure that part out, but then you have to actually put the systems in place to make sure that it doesn't happen again. That's what really good engineers do, and innovators, is they know to not only solve a problem, but they know how to prevent the problem from happening again.
