Time Management for Procrastinators.

Lennon Bone argues that procrastinators usually have an energy problem, not a time problem. Frustration and shame trigger inaction and distraction, which feed beliefs like "I'm not good enough." When he shifted his belief to "this is possible," his energy rose, he worked harder in less time, and the work itself became fulfilling.

In order to be successful as a creative, whatever success looks like to you, you need the time to work on the things that you need to work on in order to achieve that success. But when you have that time, you still don't take the action you know you need to take. You may be in paralysis analysis. You may feel overwhelmed, like, I've got so many things I need to do, I just don't know where to start. And so it feels like you have a time management problem. But I'm gonna make the argument that you actually have an energy management problem. Think about it. Energy is the thing that gets us into action. So how do you expect to take the actions you need to take to be successful if you're not managing your energy appropriately and instead are trying to manage your time better?
So let's take a look at this right now. You have a feeling. That feeling might be frustration. It might be, you know, shame that you haven't done more. And there was an action or inaction that caused you to have this feeling. Maybe you're not working on the things that you know you need to work on. Maybe if you're in that paralysis analysis mode, you're just not doing anything. And you end up finding ways to distract yourself. And then there's a story that's underneath all that that you tell yourself that says, I don't have enough time, or, I'm terrible at time management, right? And so you watch this video and you're like, how can I manage my time better, Lennon? And I'm like, I don't know that you need to. And now you're pissed at me, you know? But underneath that story is a belief. And this is subconscious. This is a thing that you don't even notice in the background. But likely the belief is something like, even if I work on this, probably won't bring me the success that I need. I'm not really good enough. This belief that you have that's running subconsciously in your head, the thing that controls your energy. And if you're not managing your belief, then you're not managing your energy. And if you're not managing your energy, you're not managing your time. Because the amount of work that you can get done in a little amount of time is unreal. When the energy is there, when we feel excited about it, when we want to move forward, all those kinds of things.
I'll be doing a whole video on, like, this business and how I'm building it. And the main things that caused me to put us in some really Financial, like, sticky situations. I just didn't even really believe that it was possible. So we have to be able to call it out. And so I just started thinking, like, okay, what if this did work? What if it could? And I just need more time. And over time, that belief strengthened as I saw more evidence that proved that it was possible. Because when my belief changed to this is possible, the story became, I certainly can't do everything in the extra two hours that I've got, but I can focus on the right things. Like, I can be okay with spending 30 minutes figuring out, like, what's going to make the most impact, because now the next hour and a half are going to be very focused, very intentional, and allow me to move forward in the right way. And the feeling became more of a sense of pride, accomplishment, fulfillment. And what was really cool is it took the power away from making money as the necessary reward, and it was the action that became the fulfillment, you know, and then the money follows that.
So I want to ask you, what are you not doing right now? And what story are you telling yourself that gives you the excuse to not do it? And then what happens if you continue to operate in that way? What is it going to cost you? And what belief do you need to change in order to give yourself the gift of energy that says, like, I'm going to move forward, right, because the positive energy will fuel positive momentum. And then you can get down to, what actions do I need to take? Because on the other side of that is pride, accomplishment, fulfillment, a sense of, you know, I've done everything I can because I want you to find success, whatever success is for you as an artist, as a creative, because the world needs your ideas. And if we have more people like you in the world doing the things that matter, it will change everything. Like, think of how crappy social media can be right now. What if we have more people like you and who you are in the world, you know, serving people well with thoughts and ideas and creativity, like, that's what we need more of. And this sort of belief can manifest itself in a ton of different ways. It can show up when you're trying to sell. A lot of artists hate selling, and it's not really for the reason that they think it is. So watch this video. I'm going to talk about why you actually hate selling and how you can sell way more of your art in a totally, like, heartfelt and real way. So check it out. I'll see you over there.
