Brad Schipke explains that PTSD comes from trauma the brain couldn't process in real time, leaving the body stuck in a persistent stress response. The key is the system's reaction, not the event itself. The brain can rewire these memories once it feels safe again.

PTSD is caused by unprocessed trauma. When something overwhelms your ability to process the trauma in real time, your brain and body store all of that unprocessed information in your long-term memory. It could be a single traumatic event, or it could be smaller experiences that built up over time. What matters isn't what happened, it's how your system responds to what happened. So when that stress response doesn't shut off, PTSD develops. So your body keeps acting like the danger is still happening even years later. But the good news is that your brain can rewire and file that memory properly. And when it does, the symptoms fade away because your body finally believes that you're safe.
