Brad Schipke explains PTSD as the body's survival system stuck in the "on" position after trauma. When the brain is flooded during an overwhelming event, it can't fully process the experience. Later, internal or external cues trigger the same physiological and emotional reactions, and this natural response isn't weakness.

What exactly is PTSD? PTSD stands for post-traumatic stress disorder, but it's not really a disorder. It really— what it is is your body's survival system stuck on the on position after something overwhelming happened. When you go through a trauma, your brain gets overwhelmed with the stimuli and the emotions of that moment, so it doesn't fully process it and it stores it in your long-term memory. So when there's a stimulus in your external or internal environment that reminds you subconsciously of the trauma, your body brings that trauma up into your conscious mind and you react in the exact same way. Now, having PTSD does not make you weak. It's natural response to trauma everybody goes through who's experienced extreme amounts of trauma.
