Brad Schipke explains PTSD as the body's survival system stuck in overdrive after trauma. When the brain can't fully process an overwhelming event, it stores it in long-term memory. Later, any cue resembling the original trauma can trigger the memory, making the person react as if it's happening again.

Post-traumatic stress disorder. It's not really a disorder. It really— what it is is your body's survival system stuck on the on position after something overwhelming happened. When you go through a trauma, your brain gets overwhelmed with the stimuli and the emotions of that moment, so it doesn't fully process it and it stores it in your long-term memory. So when there's a stimulus in your external or internal environment that reminds you subconsciously of the trauma, your body brings that trauma up into your conscious mind and you react in the exact same way. Now, having PTSD does not make you weak. It's a natural response to trauma everybody goes through who has experienced extreme amounts of trauma.
