Foreign. Welcome to make more marbles. My name is Brad Hart and today I have a very special guest. Today it's Joe Kelly. Joe is a friend of mine from flight club Mastermind. He and his wife Maritza are badasses in the addiction recovery and health space. They have a brand called Obtaining Mastery. And Joe is the author of a new book which is coming out. So I thought it was just about time that we get on a podcast and talk about all that. He's also an east coaster. He's got a wicked good accent, so I won't even pretend he can just do it. So take it away. Joe, man, welcome.
Yeah, thank you. I appreciate you having me on. You know, it's a pleasure. I mean, we met a while back and it was an instant connection. I think we're both very like minded. You know, I think between my wife being the ice queen and us enjoying that as well when we meet up. So I'm excited to be here. So thank you.
Absolutely, Joe. So catch us up to speed. What's the most exciting bits of your journey? And kind of. Let's condense those. And then what are we working on today?
Sure. I mean, I'm very excited right now about my book that's coming out. It's a long time coming. It's called Badge Bars to Beyond. If you want to get the first chapter for free and take a look at it, just go to Badge Bars beyond dot com, put in your email, we'll send you out the first chapter for free. Very excited about that because it's a very dynamic book. You know, it tells my. It's more of a hero's journey. It's for, you know, the fallen leader type of, type of story. But it has, you know, it's basically a wake up call and a GPS system for anyone ready to rebuild their life. That's what it started out, started out for, but then it transitioned into a lot of, you know, training and a lot of growth in terms of, you know, where I started out and what I do today. You know, I'm a former law enforcement officer from Massachusetts, former college football player. The. The high level view. I got hurt on the job, hurt my knee, got hooked on pain pills, lost everything, ended up doing 19 months of incarceration for the non violent criminal offenses that.
After you were a cop, which is not a good idea. I don't recommend that to anybody.
Like I said, the book's a wake up call, but it's, you know, I can look back at it now, you know, and a Lot of people are trying to get me to write that book, you know. You know, a year or two after I got out, and it just. It wouldn't have been that I was lying. My perspective would have just been different. Do you know what I mean?
Because, yeah, you wouldn't been far away enough from it to really have a key perspective and to draw the lessons out too. I'm sure you're still learning the lessons for that long.
Absolutely, absolutely. So it started out, you know, with writing a book about my personal journey, you know, and it's funny because, you know, going from launch enforcement, you know, to helping people within the addiction mental health space, you know, and then, you know, further empowering myself, you mean. I took NLP as a practitioner, where I got trained in nlp, hypnosis, time techniques, eft. And for me, when I first signed up for that, it was more for a personal growth. But I also knew that, you know, coming out of prison, I couldn't be a law enforcement officer anymore, which I was very good at. I was on the emergency response team. I was very highly decorated canine. But obviously, you know, all that went out the window with some convictions. So I wanted to do something where I could continue to give back to people, you know, and how I. How I did it was, you know, first I had to work on my own mindset, you know, where I was in the acceptance. You know, I had to get rid of some limited beliefs that I had, you know, being in that position, I had to get rid of some emotions, you know, anger, sadness, guilt, all that that held me down for so long. So when I found nlp, I was like, wow, you know, this is me just.
Cause a lot of this rhymes with my experience in LP. I've done 200 hours. I've gotten my NLP master pack and all that. Did you do it with Dr. Matt or was it somebody else?
No, I did with Michael.
Okay, got it. Cool. Yeah. So we talked about, like, timeline therapy, mer eft, we didn't learn, but that was pretty cool that you got to do that. I've experienced it as a. As a person. Anybody who's looking to do EMDR or eft, the tapping, I think they're two separate things. Right. So EFT is the tapping and then the emdr. My only warning is don't do four sessions in two weeks because it will explode your life. Yeah, yeah, it was a little too much too soon. Anyway, going forward. Joe, it's so good to have you, man. And it's just incredible to hear about your Story. I want to just ask some clarifying questions because we glazed over a bunch of stuff there. So first off, were you a Stadi or are you a local cop? That's my.
No, I was a. I was a local cop, and I was on the emergency response team for all of Southern Massachusetts.
Right on. So then that transition from being a law enforcement agent to essentially being incarcerated yourself.
Correct.
Did that come out when you were in the joint? Did that. Was that a problem for you? Did you end up getting in fights as a result of that? Like, tell me some of that story.
Yeah, I mean, I put a lot of it in my book. It says a lot of it in the first chapter. But, yeah, I mean, when I first went in, you know, I was a police officer, the first thing they wanted to do was PC me, you know, as soon as I was coming in, to protect me from anybody else finding out. And let me tell you what, People. People find out things very inside.
Prisoners are not stupid. They're just. In general.
No, not at all. I mean, they got the whole background check before most of us cops can do it on the computer. It's pretty. It's pretty interesting. But when I did go in, you know, the first time I said that I didn't want to be PC.
But you got.
Also got to understand, Brad, my. My mental state at that time, you know, losing everything, including my. You mean I was at a point in my life where I didn't. I didn't. My will to live was pretty much.
Yeah, you were like, fuck it. Bring it on. Whatever may come.
Yeah, no, exactly.
Yeah.
But the first instant I sat down in the block, and literally I walked in, I'm scoping out everything, you know, my law enforcement training. You know, I might have wanted to die, but I didn't want to go through the actual process of dying. You know what I mean? So when I walked in, I'm scoping the place out, and I sat down when no one, you know, kind of knew me and wouldn't. You wouldn't. You know, as soon as I sat down, a kid, and I'm like, a kid from my hometown was sitting at. He goes. And excuse my language, he's like. He goes, you know, I know who the fuck you are.
Right?
And I. And I went, oh, my God. Right? And I literally. Back then, I looked back at it, and what I had say to him is I go, I don't care. And. And what was pretty shocking to me is he walked away and he didn't. I don't know. I Didn't have any trouble within the first week or so. So I'm not sure he said anything to anybody. His only thing was you didn't arrest me.
I don't care.
Yeah, yeah.
I think most people, given the chance, they're not going to be vindictive, right? They might be vengeful if you do something wrong. But, you know, even in that kind of situation, like, you're all just trying to do your time at the most part, I don't think anybody goes in trying to get into fights and trying to start problems. So maybe a few people do, who knows?
It was interesting. I'll say that. There were a lot of other. Other scenarios that came up and.
Yeah, I can't wait to read that part of that that's fascinating. Just that, that juxtaposition. Cause there's probably not a lot of people have gone through that same experience. Right. Uh, so I always draw value from those perspectives, hoping I never have to live through them in that particular case. So there's that, and then. Okay, now tell. Tell us about the current state of affairs with Maritza, with your family, with obtaining mastery, and with all the work you're doing with addiction recovery.
So, you know, me and my queen. I call my queen, my ice queen. Um, she sets the bar very high.
She's tough cookie ladies.
She sets the bar very high, Brad. You know, she. She's got her doctorate psychology. She does a lot of neurofeedback. You know, when I first met Maritza, she was into a lot of alternative stuff that I never even wanted to try. My ego, football player, cop, all that stuff, you know, so she opened my mind to a lot of things. She's a reiki master. You know, we're currently. We've been married for eight years. I met her, you know, probably when I was at my best on the inside. But I had nothing, you know, materialistic. You know, I was rebuilding my life after everything. And she saw something in me at the time that I probably didn't realize. Realize that I saw myself, you know, so, you know, she opened my mind to, like, the NLP showed my mind to hypnosis. She opened my mind to reiki and meditation and yoga. I'm even a children's yoga instructor. I credit that all to my wife. Right. But the thing is, is she opened my mind to a lot of things that allowed me to grow to be the person I am and the successful person that I am, you know, so with her, we have. We have three. We three children. I have five Altogether two in Massachusetts for my first marriage, three with Maritza. We knew each other for six months, got married on the seventh month and been married for eight years. You know, that's my ride or die. You know, we do.
Congratulations.
From working out to business partners, you know, to life, you know, whether it's a business meeting or family meetings, we constantly communicate with each other, you know, in order to attack the goals that we've set in place and to help those around us. Our business Obtaining Mastery and Ohm center for Wellness. One's a wellness spa, you know, holistic for cryotherapy, infrared sauna, neurofeedback, compression boots. That's up. But then we have Obtaining Mastery where we certify. We're both trainers and NLP and the rest that I told you about. But we work with a lot of high executive CEOs on sales techniques and strategies and improving their bottom line all the way down to somebody who's just starting out or needs to tweak some things in their life, you know?
Yeah. And what I love about you guys especially is like, you're in an Internet marketing mastermind with seven figure, eight figure, nine figure marketers and you're still like, you got that hustle gear too, where you, like, you'll fly to the place, you'll talk to the person, you'll find the way, you'll get in the door, you'll convince the person needs to be convinced. Like you're like a straight up commando when it comes to sales and marketing. And I can just, you know, I know it takes time to build this, but like, I can't wait until you also master Internet marketing or really crush it on that too, because you're going to be so fricking powerful. Like to have that drive and be able to get the results you've already gotten and then multiply it with leverage is going to be awesome.
Yeah. And I, and I can thank you for some of that because I pick your. I pick your brain once in a while. I'm coming up, you mean. But that's the thing, you know, Brad, even with what we do, you know, it's having some humility. I'm good at a lot of different things, but there's, you know, having that ability to check the ego and ask another man or a woman, hey, I could use some assistance in this area. A lot of people are unwilling to do that.
Yeah, you.
And that's why I surround myself with people like yourself and people at flight club because it's like a big family we want to see each other win, you know, and why repeat a mistake that somebody else made when we can pass information along, you know, that's it.
Yeah. My favorite quote I've ever had. I don't know who said it. It might be anonymous was a fool repeats their mistakes. A wise person learns from them, but a genius learns from the mistakes of others. And that's how I've tried to live my life. And it's worked out pretty well so far. You gotta have that gear where you kind of go out and test things and try yourself. But if you can balance those two where like, okay, I can learn from the people who've gone ahead, but I'm not afraid to try things. You can be really successful really fast without burning out or blowing up or big problems.
No, I, I, I'm a big fan of the comeback story. You know, I know a little bit of yours, I know a little bit of mine, you know, I know you know, I love if we're talking about quotes, my, my favorite quote is somebody took the same situation that you're complaining about and they won with it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's inspiring to me. Do you know why? Because everyone wants to always talk about the high executive CEO who's making millions and millions and millions, but there's, they don't know that. A lot of these guys, they weren't there at one point or another. They were down there, you know me. So what was their GPS system in order to how they got to where they were? You mean it was. This is similar to mine in some cases.
Yeah. And I always tell people, you're like three to five cycles away from wherever you want to be. And what I mean by that is like Grant Cardone was a drug addict and nobody trusts him in his 20s.
Right.
And I didn't really connect with Garrett, sorry, Garrett Grant, when he first started marketing. In fact, I thought he was an asshole and a lot of people did. But now connecting with him at this level, he's gone from homeless, drug addict, nobody wants to talk to him at 25 to now he's almost 65 and he's a billionaire. So like he's four cycles away, five cycles away, and so is everybody. Right? If you could just add a 0 to your net worth, keep learning the lessons every cycle and do a little bit better next time, a little bit better the next time, and you never know where you could end up. And I think he might be, besides Russell, one of the first Internet marketing billionaires. I don't really Think there are that many.
He's amazing. A lot of those guys. And obviously with my sports background and, you know, obviously similar backgrounds as him, it's such an inspiration to watch that. But like I said before, it's like you learn in, you know, nlp. If you take any of our classes, there is no failure. There's only feedback.
That's right.
And those that can remain the most flexible rule the system. I mean, I don't do everything right, you know, me, but I surround myself with a lot of people that do do things right, you know, and I sponge off of that. And they get information for me, you know, in terms of what I'm good at and how to do this or how to do that. So very grateful for the position I am in today. I know I'm a low percentage, but, you know, I work. I work hard at it, you know.
Yeah, and it's obvious that you have a great family, you got a great wife, you got great kids, your business is taken off. It's like all those things are not an accident. In fact, take a lot of consistent, dedicated work. And anybody who is selling you the dream, just be reminded, like, hey, like, they've gone through it, you've gone through it, whether they're willing to be real about it or not, you know, I feel like I'd rather work with people who are vulnerable and authentic. And I've been getting to meet a lot of my heroes as a result of some of the things I've been doing. People I've kind of followed from the sidelines.
And they're all just as fucked up.
As you are, I promise, but in different ways. And they're working on themselves, and that's what it is, you know, it was.
Kind of like coming out of jail, you mean? I couldn't think straight. I had no discipline. You know, I hadn't been that bear since birth. You mean I didn't have anything, you know.
How long ago was this, by the way? What year did you come out?
This was 2009.
Wow. Okay, so about 10, 13 years ago now. Okay. Yeah.
You know, so, you know, I had to work on things like discipline and consistency and motivation and overcoming struggles and marketing and thinking clearly, you know, but it was steps. It was my mindset. First. It was nutrition. It was a healthy lifestyle style. You mean, it was adding little pieces of stuff that I needed in my life. And then my whole journey, it came to, you know, working with a lot of people who are just starting out to now, working with high executive CEOs on improving their bottom revenue through the NLP sales process. You mean because, you know, Brad, it's like when you talk to somebody, everyone has a different style of taking in information. Right. You know, it's like a kid going to school. It's not a good fit for everybody. But if you can learn how somebody takes in information, if they're auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and you can, and you can talk their language, your sales are going to go through the roof.
That's right.
It's small stuff that makes all the big difference in the world.
Yeah. And couple that with some of the big drivers of authority and novelty and some of the influential triggers that Cialdini talks about and some language patterns and just having a framework and a checklist, you can be unstoppable. I've been a part of, I don't know, three, four thousand, one on one sales conversations over the years, and I'm still learning stuff. I'm still hiring coaches every year. So I think that's the one skill that kind of opens up everything else. Right. If you can, if you can sell, you can write your own ticket. If you can't sell, you're going to struggle everywhere else. You know, the same thing I talk about with businesses, the offer is everything. If you got the offer dialed in, it's going to work. Everything else comes 20 times easier if you don't.
Oh, people see, people see confidence, you know, and I always say, hey, your first is your worst. But you mean we're all a work in progress and if you're working on this, I mean, you're going to be strong in other areas, you know, continue to work, don't give up, have hope, you know, because the best at what they do didn't just snap their fingers. And they were the best. They put in a lot of work. People don't see the behind the scenes and the personal development stuff and, you know, the classes and the trainings and everything else that, you know, most successful people go through to be where they're at.
You know, the failures, late nights, the early mornings, you know, the tragedies along the way. I mean, we all have them. So where do you think you're going to end up? Or where would you like to end up? Like, what's the ultimate goal here and how can we support you in getting there? This is the Make More Marbles podcast, after all.
So right now, what I'm trying to get out there, you know, the book was just put out there because I wanted the bigger platform. I wanted more, more reach you know, to let people know what my story is, to give people some hope and some inspiration. But, you know, what I really love doing is I love driving sales for people. I love coming in. Me and Maritza, we travel the country, you know, to different businesses to, you know, speak with their high executives in terms of how everything's going, improving their bottom line. And like I said, it's very dynamic. I get a lot of joy out of seeing that. But I also get a lot of joy out of seeing, you know, somebody who's rebuilding their life, you know, that is, you know, coming from nothing. And it ends up being in positions like me and, you know, that we're currently on. We're very blessed to be where we're at, you know, so at the end of the end of the day, you know, I like simplicity. You know, I mean, I really like simplicity. I love, I'm a family guy. I love being around my family, you know, so I love going in and traveling and helping out whoever I may help out in terms of whatever they got going on. We got a tool for everything that, that you could possibly think of.
What is the best way. So just recap the book. Recap Obtaining Mastery. How can people get in touch if they resonate with what you're doing? I want to get involved for the SAL stuff. And then ultimately, where do you guys have locations where people can check out all them centers and the Obtaining Mastery.
So. So we're located in Parkland, Florida. But all of our courses and trainings, you can take the live trainings or you can take them online as well. We have prerecorded certification courses from personal development to sales to whatever. Whatever it is. And if you want to get in touch with us, you can go to obtaining mastery. If you ever want to have more of a discussion, a 15 minute free call to discuss if it'd be a good fit for you or to get more information. Feel free to either go on obtaining mastery.com or reach me at joe@untain obtaining mastery.com for the book I suggest you may need even if you're not interested. You mean if you're a reader, Grab the book. You mean the first chapters for free. Go to Badge Bars beyond dot com. Check out the first chapter if, if you like the first chapter. The book will be released the end of this month. Very excited for that. We also have a docu series that's coming out. Brad, you've heard of Fahrenheit 9 11, right?
Yeah, sure.
So Fahrenheit 9. Jeff Hayes films With Kat over there.
Sure.
They actually we're on a docu series called Addiction Revealed that is going to be launching in November as well. We're very excited for that. You know, so it's like the book, the docu series, you know, obviously Flight Club and a lot of the stuff that we got coming up this very excited for. Yeah.
And just for the entrepreneur folks out there, the folks that are at seven figures looking to get to eight or beyond. Flight Club's a great community. I don't really pitch other people's communities a lot on here but I'm really proud of Glenn, what they've created and Alex, Alex just won marketer of the year for digital marketer. We're super proud of Alex. So shout out to Alex Catoni and if you are looking for a mastermind group and you want to try it out, you can come as our guest for free and check it out. For one mission you just, you know, you don't have to pay anything. You just show up, pay your own way to get there and, and see if it's a good fit. So it's a good community. I like it a lot. I'll just give a quick plug on that. Caleb Williams, he was 17, he got an internship at a bank. By 19, he was running the bank's investment division. So he's kind of a Savant now. He's 25. He's got his own company called Better wealth and they're changing the landscape of wealth management and we're trying to put on an event that really teaches people how to protect and grow their money especially when they're in the seven figure net worth range and above because it's important. What got you here will not get you there. And it's a different mindset and skillset to make money than it is to, to make it, to make it work for you.
So sustain it.
Yeah, I think it's really important. So I want to make sure nobody comes out of this next recession poorer like them to end up richer and better positioned for their next level up because like we talked about earlier, you know, it takes four or five cycles and you're, you could be a billionaire or beyond, you know. So it's just really exciting to, to be able to bring that to the world. I'm very excited. Yeah.
Yeah. Well I, I appreciate it. I appreciate it all. You mean. Very, very grateful.
Thank you Joe. And thank you for being a brother in arms and you know, a friend along the journey here and so grateful for your book and everything you're doing with Maritza and give her my love and we'll end here for everybody at home. Thank you so much for watching. This has been a Make More Marvels podcast. My name is Brad Hart. Have a wonderful day. Check out Joe Kelly at all those various websites we talked about. Attainingmastery.com badge bars, beyond dot com. And we'll see you next time. Thank you so much. Take care.
