Brian Gubernick - No Days Off! — Win Make Give with Ben Kinney
23 Apr 2026 · 45 min
In this Win Make Give episode, hosts Chad Himes and Bob Stewart interview real‑estate veteran and coach Brian Gubernick. After light‑hearted banter about health and a "wall" of inspirational figures in Brian’s home office, Brian shares his background—over two decades in real‑estate, brokerage ownership, title, coaching, and mastermind facilitation. He announces the launch of his new daily short‑form podcast, the No Days Off Podcast, explaining its purpose (daily incremental improvement), format (Monday‑Friday, 4‑10 minute episodes delivered via text link from nodaysoffpodcast.com), and content pillars (morning rituals, health, relationships, wealth, leadership). The conversation delves into the philosophy of compounding small actions (the "cheeseburger effect"), practical examples (reading a short article, swapping a burger for broccoli, daily net‑worth checks), and how these habits build over time. Brian and Bob discuss retention tactics from their ActiveRain days, the importance of unsolicited value‑add outreach, and the role of personal influence on children’s entrepreneurial mindset. The hosts close by urging listeners to register for the podcast, join the Win Make Give Facebook group, and share their own inspirational wall images. The episode blends personal storytelling, practical advice, and promotion of the new podcast series.
Chapters
Welcome to the Win Make Give podcast. Chad Himes here and Bob Stewart over there. Bob, how are you doing today?
Chad, I told you, man, I'm a little— I'm just recovering. Maybe just recovering. We had a big long week last week with, with lots of our friends and some amazing folks. We're going to talk about that. In a subsequent episode, but yeah, I'm, I don't know. I'm good. I'm on the verge of being good again, I guess.
Recovering from the funk you picked up. As you said, Chad, it might've been from the thousands of people I was about 6 inches from, or it could have been from the 25 kids at the birthday party you hosted when you got back.
I think technically what I said was the 25 snot-nosed kids at the birthday party.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I'm going with the kids because Bob, I feel fine. And I talked to many of those same people up close. Then again, I think I did say I'm also healthy compared to you.
So, I mean, that's going to help with our other guests.
We talk about health, wealth, leadership, and legacy, and our guest today, boy, he can really cover all of those things. I mean, he definitely, I know he can have a conversation with me on health and we can put you in your place as need be, but we know he can talk about wealth because he was one of the few people that we invited to join us on the wealth series. And talk about it. We know leadership is something that this gentleman is an expert at. And then of course he's leaving a heck of a legacy everywhere that he goes in the life.
And Chad, I want to say Brian is the only time we've had somebody, I, you know, in season 1, I want to say it might've been season 2. We had Brian, it was just him and I might be the only time we've run the podcast without either you or Ben. So, I mean, really he's, He's a co-host of the podcast in my eyes.
There you go. Well, we'll give him full-on credit for it. Absolutely. I think it's one of the 3 episodes that, that I missed. I think you did 2 with Brian, and those are 2 of the 3 episodes I might have missed in the history of the Win Make Give podcast. So apparently my replacement as your co-host, Brian Kubernick, welcome to Win Make Give.
Man, Chad, you told me you don't do intros, but that was pretty generous of both of you. I do appreciate it. I like to think I could cover some of these things, at least with my thoughts. I don't know if they're the right thoughts or I'm leading people in the right direction, but I'll give it my best. But I appreciate you guys, you guys having me. You have a lot of fun on this podcast. I have had the opportunity, Bob, as you mentioned, to co-host an episode or two. I didn't know it was the only time. I think you told me, hey, this is the standard or this is the norm.
I wanted it to become the standard as a norm that Chad and Ben weren't there, but it didn't end up happening. Unfortunately.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, apparently our ratings were so poor, Bob, that Chad and Ben had to come right back in and save that podcast. So thank God for that.
That could be.
You were saying, you're the one who can tell.
Ryan, before we jumped on here, you were mentioning, or you were asking like, what do we do with the video? We don't do anything with the video, but we do have it so that the three of us can see each other. You might have one of the better backgrounds or one of the funner backgrounds, like I feel like in your background is like most of my childhood and then maybe like a little bit of my dad's childhood. I see like a Winston Churchill, a, a, ooh, Muhammad Ali.
Ooh.
Like what's the criteria to get on the wall behind you? I see Biggie. Who else do I see? Is that Pat Tillman? Michael Jordan? Like what's the criteria?
You've got, you've got Dre and Snoop on here. You've got Barry, you've got, you got Barry Sanders, Willie Mays, Albert Einstein, and Frank. Actually, uh, Anne Frank, uh, my father's on here, Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger. There's, you know, here's the story, Bob. I, um, had always said to myself, when I build a home office one day, I want to have a bunch of pictures of people that I've read about or studied or idolized or grew up on, just kind of like my favorites list. And I never had a home office like that. Just wasn't the norm. And then we all know what's gone on the past few years. And when I physically constructed this home office where I'm standing right now, used to be a patio, like an outside patio for my house coming off our bedroom. I enclosed it and said, this thing's going to be my office. And then I went back to remember and like, I've always wanted to have these pictures. And so I just slowly like spent a lot of time on eBay. Same thing you do for shoes, Bob.
Yeah.
I went on, I went on eBay and I started looking for these individuals, but I wanted specific photos of them, like the Biggie Smalls. Picture, like that one is the one I wanted, the Muhammad Ali underwater. That was the one I wanted. So it's taken a little while to assemble. Like right now, for example, I'll tell you, I want a Serena and Venus picture, but I want one when they're kids with their dad. And that's because I have two daughters and, you know, like, and I watched the movie and, you know, like all of those things. But I've always wanted a picture of Venus and Serena, but I gotta find one as kids. Just haven't found the right one, but I love that.
I love that. You guys, that the one right there of like, um, that's FDR and Stalin.
Yes.
Um, and that's exactly right.
Bob, you've got much better eyes than I do, or a way better camera.
It's not that I have better eyes.
Anyone else?
Once, once Brian said, I'm looking for the certain pictures, like that picture is a real iconic one of them coming together at the end of World War II to sign the treaty or whatever. So now I'm starting to like, that's really cool, Brian. I love that.
All right. So, so Bob, we will know we've made it when we make Brian's wall.
Oh, I think that's how we'll know when we've really made it. I was thinking, I know I'd make it when I have my own wall. Cause I, I like Brian. I want to build my own office too.
So who's missing off Brian? That's what I was going to ask you, Bob. If you had a wall like that, I know the picture I want. What's the picture missing from that wall for you?
For me personally, what would be the picture? And that's— you want to tell, tell us yours?
So yeah, mine's Jackie Robinson, right? He's always been my hero. He's always been the, the idol that I've looked up to. I got to meet and talk to his wife. Okay, so he's there. All right.
He's on. And I wanted him sliding in the home plate. That one took me a little while to find him.
That's the picture it's gotta be.
Yeah.
Him stealing home has gotta be the picture.
I don't know, man.
I don't know. Brian's got a lot of—
Bob's would probably just be a sneaker.
Here's the thing, and I guess for those listening, for you guys, I'll tell you, like, it might sound cheesy, but I think you'll appreciate this. I think every one of these individuals, there's a theme or a story or something they stood for. There's actually like a class behind me. Like there's something I could teach behind me. Like for example, Dre and Snoop, you know, it's a great iconic picture of Dre and Snoop. That is an amazing partnership that's, that's, that's gone on now for 3, 4 decades. Like Snoop would not be where he is at without Dre, and Dre wouldn't be there without Snoop. You take Barry Sanders. Why do I love Barry Sanders as a football player? Bobby used to hand the, used to hand the football back to the ref. No, no celebration. Just, hey, this just, I have my lunch pail, I have my hard hat, I go to work. You take Rosa Parks here in the middle, the amount of, of noise and challenge that that woman had to endure and persevere, just like Jackie Robinson. Is second to none. And I have like Sir Roger Bannister over here too. He's the 4-minute mile guy. Yep. Right. So, you know, mindset and it can't be done until someone does it. Like there's literally a theme to every one of these. So when I think around different people I put up there, I also gotta think what's the value? What's that person stand for? I look at this again, cheesy, I get it, but I look at it and I'm like, it motivates me from time to time based on whatever I have going on in my, in my world.
All people that, I don't know, sometimes we put people on a pedestal and we think like, man, they're like extra human or superhuman, but those are just all people that found a way in the world, right? And brought the best out of themselves to share with the rest of us.
Yeah. That's great. And you're right, Brian. I look forward to that class or maybe that episode when we get to that point.
Episode. Maybe Brian could drop it on his own podcast.
Wait a minute. Stop giving away the good stuff, Bob.
I let the secret out.
Bob, you're always, always one step ahead and giving away stuff.
Show notes. Are there show notes for this episode?
Are there ever show notes? Hey, at least I gave you a book finally while we were together. Look, Brian, many of the people listening might recognize your voice because you did join us during the Wealth Series. We had you and Ben do an episode on real estate investing. And yes, we are going to be doing a real estate investing series. Where we will get the 4 of us together and we will really dive into a multiple episode on that. Yet there might be some people who didn't listen to the wealth series and they don't know who you are other than what I briefly really said at the beginning. Give everybody— who is Brian Gubernick? Introduce yourself to our audience.
Yeah, I'd love to. Thanks for that. And by the way, uh, Chad, you should know, here's something else you can make fun of me, Bob, and me about. Uh, I told Bob this last week. There are people that somehow have told, they've said to me, Brian, I've listened to the podcast so many times and I love hearing all you've said. And I'm like, wait a second, I'm not really on the podcast all that often. I realized or learned there are people that actually hear my voice and think I'm Bob, and sometimes hear Bob and think he's me. I think it's the raspy yelling that might do it. But if you think you're hearing my voice more often, you're not. That's actually Bob. And vice versa. So just a quick thing to mention. I, Chad, I've been, and Bob, you guys know, I've been around the real estate industry for some time, in real estate now for 2 decades, actually as a realtor for 16, almost 17 years now. And I've held virtually every seat I think one can hold from You know, being a solo realtor to building a team, to building a team that was in a handful of states, to owning brokerages and title and coaching and training and just all the ancillaries that come with it. And so as a result, you know, I've had the opportunity to build relationships with guys like you and meet somebody, so many people across the nation. Today I spend the vast majority of my time doing two things. I am partnered with Ben and Chris, like many of our listeners and like you guys. And so I spend a lot of time at Place, and I also spend time running a company called Metrics that runs masterminds on a quarterly basis that are focused. It's focused on real estate, of course, in the real estate business, but we get into health and wealth and relationships and time management and leadership and all of those things beyond just the real estate business. So I've just had a very fun run, a lot of ups and downs. Fortunately for me, a few more ups than downs. And so I'm net positive by a small amount, but it's been a, it's been a real fun run. And I guess it's led me here to the pinnacle of my career, spending some time with you guys. So I'm excited though. Thank you guys for having me here.
Of course. Ass kisser. What? What?
Right? This is what I love. One, now I can replace you, Bob, because people don't know whether it's you or Brian talking apparently.
They don't even know the difference. I'm in trouble.
We either need to introduce video or you need to get better, Bob.
All right.
So here's the thing. I'm just going to confess, right? Because audience— There is someone out there who is like me in this situation. Has there ever been somebody who's a few steps ahead of you and you don't know why yet? You don't like that person, right? They're doing things that you're like, well, why aren't I doing that? And, and why did they get that break?
Right.
And we get into that. And even me, I got a great mindset about things, but even me, I get into that. And Brian, that was you for so many years. We didn't know each other, right? We did not know each other well. We knew of each other. I clearly had seen this. I had heard your name and I was like, why the frick are they saying Brian again? And why is Brian doing that over there? Why did he end up in that opportunity? Why haven't I, right? And folks, it's amazing how many times we will create our own story. As to what it's going to be. And all it simply takes is one opportunity to have a conversation with that person and shatter what you have built up into your head and find out that that person is right there and they're ready to provide help as well and help you get where you want to go. So folks, I just want you to understand there's somebody in your life right now that you're envious of, you're jealous of, you don't like for some reason, and you can't really explain what it is. Pick up the fricking phone, go find them at the next opportunity because you'll probably have some amazing conversations with that person as I've been able to have with Brian ever since I let the— I, not him, not anybody else. I let that wall come down and just be able to say, all right, I'm going to give this guy a chance and found out that I was completely wrong on every belief I had put out there.
Chad, I appreciate you saying that. You'd never shared that with me before. This is for everyone listening. This is This is, dare I say, breaking news. I appreciate you saying that and I appreciate the transparency and especially the humility. The reality is, I think we all have that person or persons.
Yep.
Right? Like as you were saying that, I was actually thinking in my head, oh my gosh, there's a person or two or three that I think that around.
Yep.
That, that, that, you know, I, I need to probably confess to or have discussion with maybe individuals that I've been judging in some respects and unfairly, you know, doing it unfairly. Not to say that you were doing that. I'm just saying like, that's what's going through my head. The other thing is too, and we all know this, and I've heard you guys say this in the past, in past episodes, you know, like your variation of what I'm about to say, which is this business, this industry that we're in, it is massive. But the community itself is relatively small, right? Like we've all had this experience, like you gotta be super careful around how you judge or how you behave or what you think because, and this isn't for you, Chad, I'm just saying broadly speaking, in my experience, every time I think in my head, I will never be in business with that guy or girl, a decade later, they're like my closest business partner. It's happened so many times to me now where I've literally said there's no way we will ever cross paths. And 7 years later, we're, we're working together every single day. It's just, it, it's cliché, it's corny, but this never say never, like I've seen it happen over and over and over again in business and in life. You know, I just never see myself crossing paths and, and here we are, right? So, I don't know. I don't know if that makes any sense, but I do appreciate you saying that, Chad. And I think we all, we all have that, that person or two or three.
Yeah.
I think everyone's got a favorite.
You want to know who mine was for the longest time? Chris Smith. You guys both know Chris. Like, I know he's just way back in the early, like, ActiveBrain days. That guy was, he'd be up on stage. I'm like, why? Like, but again, the first time I ever talked to him, I have a vague or just an absolute recollection of it. Like, immediately changed my opinion. I was like, oh my God, this guy's like the nicest guy, super helpful. Like, I love that, Chad. Everybody has one of those people.
We all have one, maybe even more than one. And I just figured it was an opportune time to confess it and admit to it. I try to be as transparent as I can all the time. And like I said, Brian was that guy. I always said I'd never get into business with that guy. I'm not going to name that guy.
Nope.
And and here we are, right? And happy to have him on the podcast and the opportunities that are coming in the future that, who knows how we'll end up intertwining on all of that. All right. So let's get to it because we're here for a specific reason and then we'll let the conversation get onto health and we'll make fun of Bob together and all of that kind of stuff, Brian. But we're here for a specific reason. You have a huge announcement and opportunity. Bob's kind of let it out of the bag a little. Some people might be hearing this and know because they attended the Bill Tao where you announced it. Give us your big news.
Yeah, well, I, I appreciate you calling it big. It's big to me. I don't know if it's big to anybody else, but it is big to me because it's been something I've been working on or thinking about for quite some time and finally pulled it together and am taking action around it. And that's that, like so many have done before me and done so at a high level, I, I have rolled out, I am launching a podcast or have launched a podcast. It's called the No Days Off. Podcast with Brian Gubernick. So you don't confuse, you know, me with another Gubernick, just so we're clear.
Of course.
I wanna make sure I have my name on there. But No Days Off Podcast, and it, it's big for me, not just because it is a podcast, but because it's something like this no days off concept that we're gonna talk around. It's something I've been attempting to live, honor, teach, discuss, coach around for years. Like it's been part of my world and I wanted to get that message out to more and hadn't really figured out a way to do it. Obviously the podcast medium has always, it's existed for a long time, but running it in a structure that was, I guess, honored what it is I was trying to achieve. That was tough to put together and we finally figured out a recipe for it. And so, Chad, that is the announcement. I've rolled out this podcast. It jumps off here in the coming days. And my hope is all of your listeners and all those outside, inside and outside the industry will join in on the fun and listen into a few things that I have to share. What's the—
what I mean, no days off. Like, I mean, I like to take a day out. Like, give me the— give me the idea, right? Because I think a lot of people go, no days off. Like, I'm going on vacation. Chad knows I love to go on a good vacation, but What just the concept itself, Brian, kind of dive into it for us.
Yeah, sure. And I apologize if I'm a little long-winded in this setup, but I think it's important to just kind of get the mindset or the point across, right? So many that attended Built How, the conference, not this past one, but the one before in Phoenix, you may remember I did a presentation on time.
And time is one of my favorites, by the way, one of my favorite presentations really like that I've ever heard.
Well, I, I really appreciate you sharing that. The, the, the truth is, and in summary, what I discussed that day, and we all know this, but I was using examples and trying to demonstrate it and, and, and create some emotion around it, right? That time on this planet, you know, time is finite and we waste a lot of it. And when I say we waste it, I don't mean we dilly-dally. I just mean that we don't live all out. We don't live full out. We don't live, uh, and all of us are guilty of this from time to time. We don't, uh, take care of ourselves to the level we probably should or could. We don't honor our relationships or are diligent about our relationships to the level we could or should be. Um, our personal world, our personal growth, our business, our finances, our job. There's just, there's just, you know, so much opportunity to be better and do more. And time being finite, we have a limited amount of time and resources for that matter to go make shit happen. And, and that was the point of my time presentation. But the crux, like the core behind that, my mindset around that is what I'm saying here. You really don't get any days off. And you're right, Bob, lots of people think, well, like, I want to take a day off. And I, I'm not talking about like you should be working in your business every single day, 14 hours a day, right? Like you may have to do that at points in your life, but that's not what I'm talking about when I say no days off. I mean, you get no days off from getting better every single day. The idea is that, that every single day brings a new opportunity, right? For you to get better. And it's, it's better at business or, or better at your relationships or better at your health, just better in life. And that's the movement, right? Like we get to spend, in my opinion, 1 minute or 10 minutes or an hour just improving in some small way that compounded over time makes a difference. It's just a daily exercise. It's a daily, thought process, right? Like, if I chip away every single day at something, then again, over the course of time, I will get better. And again, I just think there's— we have the opportunity to do that. And it doesn't have to be— you don't have to be over the top. Like, I'll give you an example. If you read an article tomorrow and it takes you 3 minutes and it was purposeful in how you chose that article, you didn't haphazardly walk into it, You didn't pick up the paper and it was the first thing you read, but you wanted to learn more about something and you spent 3 to 5 minutes reading that article. You made strides towards improving in that specific area of your world. That is taking no days off. If you go talk to, you know, you, you have, you know, I have my two daughters and I use them. I talk to them about, I talk about them quite a bit in my presentations, but I have limited time with my daughters and I want to have the greatest relationship that I can have or build the greatest relationship I can. With my daughters, if I can have one specific conversation with them that influences that relationship in a positive way, I didn't take that day off, right? Like in my health, this might sound like a goofy example, but you know, a lot of times when people ask me for health advice, not that I'm the health guru, but you know, I have experience in this area. They'll ask me health advice and I'll seriously say, it'll sound like a joke, but I will seriously say, yeah, I eat broccoli. And what do I mean by eat broccoli? I just mean if tomorrow you replace the fries that are on your plate with broccoli, it actually will make a difference in your health. And then compounded over time, it becomes a bigger health goal or health objective. So again, I apologize. I know that's long-winded. You could see, you could probably hear it in my voice. I get really fired up around this topic as much as I talk about it. I just really think all of us. Can get better every single day at something. And in summary, to me, the key to success, you know, I talked about it at Built How recently, the key to success is forming habits around those things that failures just don't like to do. And if I look at failures in relationships or business or health or wealth, whatever it be, odds are they're not doing something. And I want all of our listeners, you know, all of everybody to do those things, to be successful. And to me, it starts with just doing one thing to improve your performance in your respective world every single day.
You said a word in there that to me is what this all builds on, compounding. You said it compounds, right? Like the 3 minutes, there's a guy on Instagram, he's a great follow, Ricky Carruth. I don't know, Brian, you know who Ricky Carruth is?
Yeah.
He did this thing where he was talking about Like if you ate a cheeseburger every day, like if you ate one cheeseburger today, for the three of us, it wouldn't make a difference today, right? If we ate one every day this week, probably wouldn't make a difference for us. Now we're all at that age where if we ate one every day this month, we'd maybe start to feel it around the edges a little bit. But every day this year, for sure, right? I'd see a year later, Brian would be like, what have you been doing, dude?
Eating cheeseburgers every day.
And the flip side would be a salad. One salad, not going to change things. Every salad for a week, not going to change things. And Ricky was talking about this around the idea of prospecting in your business. Same deal. Like one day you show up, it's not going to change your business, but it's the compounding of doing that thing day over day. You read that 3 to 5 minute article about that thing you want to get better at, not going to change your approach to that thing. But if you did that every day intentionally, you said, I'm going to learn, like in my world, it might be, I'm going to learn about retention and success, right? I'm going to spend 3 to 5 minutes a day. The compounding of that, we'd look back a year later. It would've changed the trajectory of that thing in our life.
Oh, I totally agree. I mean, a good example, maybe a great example of this coming off the Wealth Series you guys just ran, which is exceptional. If anybody's listening right now that hasn't gone through the Wealth Series, I know everybody says this to you. I'm going to say it to you as well. Make sure you go and listen to it. There are so many amazing things taught in the Wealth Series, in my personal opinion. Probably the greatest thing taught is the awareness around net worth and passive income. Like the simple awareness makes a massive difference. And where am I going with this? If you looked at your net worth statement every single day for 1 minute, if you just glanced at what it is you have in terms of assets and liabilities and, and, and what's the net worth derived from that. If you looked at it every single day and it was top of mind for you, you somehow will stumble into opportunities. Opportunities both being places you should put your money, but also expenses you could potentially cut, right? Like you just start thinking about it. So like the compounding effect of looking at your money, what you have and do not have every single day creates a new just mindset around dollars and, and, and cents. And things will come your way as a result. I just believe that. And again, it's that compounding effect. It's the cheeseburger effect that you just described.
The, um, don't give Ben those words. He'll start using the cheeseburger effect as a new term.
The cheeseburger effect.
He actually really will. That, that's actually, that's, that's very true.
The cheeseburger effect. I think that's what it's called.
All right, well, here's the thing. We've got no days off. So audience, Pay attention, right? If you're listening to us on your phone right now, open up the app and search for No Days Off, right? Or, or look in our show notes. Hopefully Dave has put the link to the, to the podcast direct because it is a part of the Win Make Give podcast network, right? We are bringing this under the umbrella. We are excited to announce another podcast. I want you to get a little, I want you to gimme a sample. How long are the episodes gonna be? Is it gonna be No Days Off? Are you dropping 'em 7 days a week? Are you dropping 'em 5 and giving 'em the weekends to not have to listen? How long are they going to be? What are you going to cover? Give us, give us a little tease. Be the coming attraction for the podcast.
Yeah, I love the question. So here's the way it's going to go. Every morning, if you in fact register, you will get a text and that text will have a link to the No Days Off podcast episode of that particular day.
All right.
Stop.
How do they register? How do they register right now if they want to register?
Yeah. If you go to nodaysoffpodcast.com, you can in fact register. nodaysoffpodcast.com. Chad, I am negotiating on nodaysoff.com right now. So if you're wondering why is it not that, it's because I don't own that domain yet, but I figure if I chip away every single day leveraging the cheeseburger effect, maybe, just maybe I will have that URL. But today it is nodaysoffpodcast.com. You can in fact register there and it will arrive in your messages every morning. It is going to be, the episodes are anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes long. It is very short and it is quick and to the point, right? Like I do a brief intro, but then I get into the conversation of the day. I will tell you one that I am working on. Right now, that will be part of some of the early episodes, I'm sure, has to do with your morning ritual, right? So every day, just to be clear, I believe every single day we can get better at something. When I talk around morning ritual, what I'm really talking about is jumpstarting your day, getting off the ground with high energy and creating momentum. I do not necessarily, Chad, have the answer for the morning ritual. I will share what it is I do. That doesn't make it right. The focusing question, or what I want everybody in the audience to think around, is what's my morning ritual and how is it jumpstarting my day? Is it in fact creating momentum? The reality is how we start our day will impact how we take that first meeting, will impact how we build relationships or don't build relationships. It'll sustain us through the morning and propel us into the afternoon. So I actually believe that if we're not starting our day off properly, we're setting ourself up for failure. So again, the focusing question for that particular episode would be, what's your morning ritual and is it successful? And if not, what should you be doing so that you have greater result? Right? So I'll talk around that. Uh, we'll get into various aspects though. We'll get into health and relationships and personal life and growth and all of these things. The idea for me, or what I really want to get across, I just want to get people thinking a little bit differently, and I want it first thing in the morning, and I want them to have some sort of thought or path or objective around how they're going to get a slight bit better in some area of their world starting that day. Does that make sense?
Yeah. I'm sitting over here with an evil smile and laugh. Remember what I said earlier? The confession I made? Yeah, I take it all back. I hate you again. And here's why, folks, and this is where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing sometimes in the win-make-give world. For the last month, I've been working on the LifeSpark podcast, which was going to be a 5 minutes every morning while you brush your teeth to get yourself going. I was waiting to get to Bill Tao to sit down with Dave Weldon, our producer, and then Ben and say, Here's the podcast I'm launching solo. And before I had the meeting, you got up on stage and announced this podcast. And all I did was throw my notes up and walk out of the room.
Damn you, you didn't tell me that, but you know what? What a great opportunity for you and me to collaborate now.
There you go. We'll see about combining them and I'll take some of your days off for you or something. And we'll be able to share some messaging. We'll talk more after this and maybe I'll stop hating you again.
Man, Chip, first of all, I'm sorry. And second of all, I am certain there's ways we can work together. I'm going 5 days. It's Monday to Friday.
Good for you.
And so we'll see, right? Like, as we go, you know, I'll be transparent with everybody, right? Like, we're trying to figure out what the right recipe is. I like to operate in terms of, like, businesses or projects I launch. I'm a big fan of that crawl, walk, run approach. So we're, we're crawling. We'll see what hits and what doesn't hit. And should there be themes or should there be a focus for the week or should I bring some people on to interview? Like we're going to do different things like that. I do. I can tell you for some that might find this interesting, you may remember a gentleman named Mack Newton. Mack hung out with us at Built How. Mack is going to join me for future episodes to talk around Specific things that are important to him as they pertain to taking no days off, which is an honor to have that guy. I mean, he's second to none. And so I'll have him join. I definitely want some of our friends, you know, Chad, Bob, some of our friends to join and talk about, you know, areas that they really excel in, right? Like Bob, you, you mentioned retention, right? Like if retention is something we should be talking about. I want Bob to come in and share his 3, 4, 5 minutes. Remember, this is not a half-hour interview. It is a 5 to 10 minute segment. So Bob, you're the guy. What should everybody be thinking about in terms of retaining top talent? I'll hear— I'll play along with you.
This is something that we used to do back in our ActiveRain days, Chad. We had this philosophy, and this is to the no days off thing in our company, a pretty small company at that time in terms of people. Every day, we, we, every person on the team, and there was only like 6 of us back then, Brian, we had to unsolicited reach out to one person in our world and wow them. And it was like a philosophy that we, we lived for years where unsolicited, we would reach out to one of our customers essentially and just do something to try to wow them that they were not expecting. And it took us 5 minutes, 10 minutes. I mean, sometimes you'd get into a conversation with somebody, you'd be on the phone with them for a half hour. But we built an army that 15 years later is still this community that like lives basically on its own. It's self-sustaining now. But it was on the back of 5 or 10 minutes a day, just reaching out to somebody unsolicited and offering, you know, our help basically.
So you were the guy that day on No Days Off, and I could see a future episode in the making here, right? It's, we're talking about retaining your customers, things that we can do to get better starting right now, a slight improvement we could make today to have greater relationship with our, with our clients, with our prospects, whoever it may be. Everybody listening, I want you to think around what you could be doing. That's the spirit of No Days Off. I have my friend Bob here to share specifically what it is he's doing to increase retention and live or honor the spirit of never taking a day off, as you know, as is with his relationship with the clients. Bob comes in, 5 minutes of wow, which by the way, everybody should be taking that note down right now. Like if you just took your top 5 people every day and gave them something to say wow about, what would your relationships look like in a month, in 6 months, in a year, in 10 years? Right? And then wrap that up with, you know, okay everybody, here's the focusing question. What are you going to do today that makes you a slight bit better in this specific area around client retention or employee retention, whatever it may be. So Bob, that was a really good role play because that's in essence what we're looking to achieve with this podcast.
I love it.
All right.
So we're just gonna cut that bit and we're gonna drop that on, you know, No Days Off. Folks, go to No Day— I'm not wrapping this up. I'm just reminding you, go to nodaysoffpodcast.com to register so you can get the text sent to you every morning with the link, or just go subscribe to the podcast if you don't want the text and you're gonna go do it on your own, right? The text is there as the reminder, give you the easy way. Just go subscribe. It'll be there when you get up every morning. It'll be dropped and ready to go as the newest podcast in the Win Make Give Podcast Network. Brian, we're excited to have you on as a team for that.
Brian, can I ask you a question? Because I've, I've, um, you just did.
You want to ask him another one?
I have young boys. Um, what, like, this is not, this is like, I'm taking us totally off track now. I just have a question about you as somebody that I look at as like, you've been an entrepreneur for, for most of your your career. I think you would identify with that. Although Ben doesn't like to identify as an entrepreneur because he says like 98% of them fail or whatever. So maybe you don't want to identify as an entrepreneur, but where does that come from? Like, is that because you saw your parents working in jobs and you wanted to do a different route? Or like, where does that entrepreneurial spirit in you personally come from?
Really good question. 100% my upbringing. I'm not saying that's the answer for everybody. I can just tell you, by the time I was old enough to start making my own decisions around career path and business and all that, I actually didn't know any different. I, I was brainwashed to think everybody worked their asses off, everybody started their own business and had the trials and tribulations that went around with that. Everybody didn't get days off in terms of work. Like I lived a very, I lived a great childhood. I have the most amazing parents and they worked 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day. And I just, I thought that's what you're supposed to do. And so that's work ethic. Yes. But from an entrepreneurial standpoint, that was what I observed. Like they started their own businesses, they ran their own businesses to what I perceived to be successful. I'm sure there was lots of ups and downs. I probably didn't know about the downs, but I just, I saw it every day. And so for me in my own house now with a, you know, with a 12-year-old and a 10-year-old, and Bob with your boys, I think that environment and the conversations you're having at that dinner table are so critical. And I think our role as parents is to do everything we can to influence our little people to be contributing members of society in some way, shape, or form. When I say influence, that, that can be used interchangeably with leadership. We just have to do everything we can to kind of shape, shape their mindset, shape their behavior such that when they graduate from our house, you know, they go out in the world and make a difference. And so at my dinner table, Not that the girls ever listen to me, by the way. I don't want you to think I've got these kids that are sitting there with a notepad, listening to their— sitting there listening to the wisdom of their father.
No, no, no.
They basically look at me and walk away. But I'm nonstop— I talk about money openly with the kids. I talk to them about a house we're going to buy as a rental or a move I have to make. In a business I own. I bring them, as you know, Bob, like I bring them into my events. I make them present. I have them put, I had, I had my younger daughter put together a slide deck for an event and went through it with her. And, and it's going to sound harsh to many of you. I'm like, honey, that this needs to be a lot better. Like you can't go in front of a room like this and present. And that might sound tough, but like, this is, these are, you know, I'm trying to prepare her and influence her and give her some tough love. Right. And she, what did she do? She improved it. And she went in front of the room of 100 wealthy adults and presented, and in my opinion, knocked it out of the park. Point though is, and, and to get back to it, not that I'm doing it the right way, I think our job's to create the environment. And if we want, if we want those kids thinking money, thinking entrepreneurship, just thinking I've gotta make a difference in this world, we have the ability and, and I should say the responsibility to, to contribute or to influence that mindset.
I've got, yeah, so our 5-year-old, like 3 days ago, came to his mom and was like, I want to do a, I want to, and I think he'd get this from YouTube. I don't know where he is. Like, I want to make, I want to have a snow cone machine. And we're like, what? He's like, yep. I want to do snow cones out on the corner by our house. And I'm like, all right. I'm like, but what if we went up to Kenmore, the little town we lived in? There's this little area up there where in the summertime kids come out. I'm like, what if we went up there, Carter? And we go talk to the people at Kenmore Diva. Ask him if we can rent a little space outside here. So, and to be honest with you, I don't like 15 years ago, maybe Brian, if I had children at that point that were the same age, I don't know that I would have had the right mindset to be able to foster that 5-year-old coming to me and saying, dad, I want to start a little business. Right. I've had to work on myself to even get to that point. Maybe I'm thankful that I'm mostly having children like later in life when I have a little bit more wisdom, less energy, Brian, but more wisdom. Potentially. I love hearing that, that you can, you can just kind of foster that environment for him.
And, and, and hey, by the way, like that snow cone business he starts, which is awesome, by the way, maybe it doesn't have success and he's going to have to, you know, reconcile that or deal with the challenges that come. Like, I thought I'd open up the stand and all these people would come, you know, like we, we, I think that stuff like that is so valuable. And again, going back to the original question, I think that not intent, my parents didn't do that intentionally, but I was a pretty observant kid. Like I watched that and I was brainwashed. I was brainwashed. And by the time I got outta college and went into the corporate world, you know, it's no surprise I was there like 18 months and I'm like, ah, this isn't for me. You know, it just, I wasn't raised in that environment. So no, by the way, that's not to say that people don't live extraordinary lives and, and like the corporate path is for them. I'm just saying like the question around entrepreneurialism or entrepreneurship, that, that, that's where it came from for me.
Wow.
All right.
So folks, I, I hope everybody in the audience, that time just went by, right? I'm looking at the clock now and going, wow, we're kind of, you know, this is how long we like to keep an episode at the maximum. Uh, time just flew by folks. I want you to understand if you agree. If you were sitting here just getting information and value and taking stuff away, you've gotta go to nodaysoffpodcast.com and get yourself registered. 'Cause you're gonna get these 5, 4 to 10 minutes. He says, I'll, I'll just say 5, 5-minute episodes every single weekday coming to you, which is gonna help challenge your mindset and push you in that compounding yourself in any given area and multiple given areas, uh, with Brian leading us on this fantastic podcast. Brian, before I ask for your final thoughts, I just want to ask, I see one hand. The other one's not in your pocket, is it?
Haha, I knew you were gonna go there. So, so Chad, by the way, Chad's acting like he doesn't know me all that well, which I guess technically we're just getting to know each other a lot, a lot better now. But, uh, it didn't stop him, Bob, from walking up to me and saying, hey, uh, can I, can I give you some, can I give you some feedback? Of which, of course, what am I going to say? No, you can't give me feedback. And I said, yeah. And he goes, that presentation you just did. I said, yeah. He goes, keep your hand out of your pocket. It looks creepy.
And I'm like, hey, you know what?
Number one, you're absolutely right. And number two, I love a guy at the very start of a new relationship. He has no hesitation. To critique my game, which everybody needs a friend like that.
Seriously.
The next time I went on stage though, what did I do? I had my hands behind my back the whole time. So all cozy, Chad.
And I did, when I was on stage with Jolene at one point, go to put my hand in my pocket and then hear myself say, Brian better not be in the audience as I quickly fixed it. Because yes, it's a comfort position, yet it doesn't look good when speaking from stage. Brian, give us a last thought.
Wrap this one up.
Close this one out for how you're gonna, what you want to leave everybody with. If there's just one thing they took?
Yeah. Close it out. I mean, I think we, we've really nailed it here. At the end of the day, gang, I, I think everybody hears me saying it every single day. We can get better. Whether you listen to my podcast or not, I mean, I'd love you to, but if you don't, that's okay. Just, I want you to wake up every morning and ask yourself, what can I do to up my game in some area of my life? Time is finite. Don't waste days. You know, we've all seen the study about the 5 regrets of the dying. If you haven't, go Google it. Go Google the 5 regrets of the dying. What you're gonna find in summary, they wasted a lot of time. So don't waste time. Go get better. Go improve. Take no days off and join me on the podcast if you'd like some guidance or direction or influence on that.
Love that. nodaysoffpodcast.com or just find the podcast itself and subscribe. The newest member of the Win Make Give Podcast Network. Now folks, here's what I want you to do as well. I want you to come to our Facebook group, you know it, facebook.com/group/winmakegive, and I want you to answer the question I'm gonna post. If you had an inspiration wall like Brian has behind him that we talked about at the beginning, I want you to go find the image on Google and I want you to share it in that post. I wanna know what's that picture of who you would put on the wall. Like I said, Me, it was without question Jackie Robinson stealing home. Brian's already got that one up there. Bob's still thinking on it. We'll wait for Bob to share with us.
I'll share mine because Brian, you've got your father on there. And so for me, I would put like, of all the people in my life, I'd put my Grandma Stewart on there because to me she represented love. And I think that we all need more love. So mine would be my Grandma Stewart amongst many of those other just icons that you have there. But if I had one photo I had to stick on a wall, Chad, that'd be it.
All right, so now I'm going to adjust the challenge a little bit, audience. A public figure, right? Get your family out of it. We love you, we love it. We should all have someone from our family, hopefully, that's up there, or a friend. I'm looking for the public figure that belongs on your wall. Come share with us in our Facebook group. As always, folks, until our next episode, Do good!
