27 Jan 2023 · 20 min
Brian Karr from Mold Finders Radio explains why mold problems can't be fixed with 60-second social media tips. Quick-fix sprays and cutting out visible patches often fail and delay proper remediation. He recommends using free content for basics but hiring qualified inspectors for actual diagnosis and treatment.

Hello again, everyone, and welcome to today's show. If you're one of the 130 million people that are dealing with Sirs Lyme disease, autoimmune disease, or other conditions that are impacted by mold on a daily basis and you need to learn how to eliminate that exposure, then you're in the right place. My name is Brian Carr, and you're listening to Mold Finders Radio.
Hey, everyone, what's going on today? I kind of want to talk about some comments that I've been seeing. Just various posts and different things. I've noticed a couple of them, and I feel like I understand where they're coming from, but I kind of want to talk through it a little bit and we can put it out there and see where it goes. So the general comment is, you know, a lot of the stuff that I share on social media and different places, it's helping to sort of open your eyes to the fact that there may be problems going on that you're not aware of. Right? Because if we're sick and we're not feeling right and we're looking for all these answers, but the possibility of our environment and a mold problem or whatever is not even brought up onto our radar, then there's literally no chance that you'll ever get better. Because you don't even know where to look for it. Right? You don't even know where to look for the solution. You're looking in the complete wrong place. Right. That's a lot of the driving force behind the stuff that I try to share with you guys. It's just all about trying to open our eyes and open our mind to different things that can be impacting us. And in doing that, a lot of times I'm showing examples of things. I'm explaining, like, why things are happening. And sometimes some of the comments are like, this is really cool. Thanks for showing me all the problems. But, like, how do I fix it? Fix it for me. How do I fix this? How do I do this? Right? And it's just interesting. I think part of it is just kind of like the world we live in now, where we think we could go on to Instagram and TikTok and search something and find all the answers we need. Like that, at the snap of a finger, to some extent, there's some fun things that you could do. For example, on New Year's Eve, we didn't buy a bottle of champagne yet. We were like, oh, man, we got to figure out how to cool this champagne down. We have an hour and a Half to get the champagne. Cool. So what do we do? We jump on a TikTok. My wife, within 30 seconds, finds some little old lady, which is hilarious, that teaches us how to chill our champagne in, like, an hour. And sure enough, it worked. And it was incredible. Right? Was that a very complex thing that had to be explained? No. You want to know what the answer was? You get, like, a big tub, you put ice in it, you fill it with water, and then you add salt into it, you stick your bottle in it. The end. It wasn't complicated. It was very simple. There's not all of these external variables that change the effectiveness. So. So those types of things, we can look on social media and expect to get some sort of instant gratification and a response. Cool, that's great. Now we're talking about your health. We're talking about complex systems in a house and, like, how to handle things. Like, some of these things are not something that you can put an answer to in 30 seconds in a TikTok post or an Instagram reel. It's important because while the ability for us to search stuff and get answers very quickly, we've almost become so accustomed to it that the concept of actually doing research and understanding that I can't do everything myself all the time. There's a reason there are experts and specialists and things. That stuff gets kind of pushed away because there are some things we can do ourselves now that we weren't able to do. And that's what's amazing about having all of this at our fingertips. But in doing so, you can apply that thought process to everything that exists. You can only apply that to certain things. You can't search something and say, I now know how to perform heart surgery. It doesn't work that way. Right? Well, you're kind of asking the same question when you're like, okay, how do I address this mold issue in my house? How do I fix my health? How do I detox? How do I do these things? It's not that easy all the time, some prevention stuff to try to stop it from happening more. You can stop the source of the water and this or that, but some of it goes beyond that. And so these comments are, you know, I'm seeing some of them. And. And let me just say, it's not a lot. It's some. But, like, I read everything, right? And I read everything because I want to know, like, what you guys are thinking, and I want to make sure that what I'm sharing and putting out there is addressing what you guys are thinking to try to help, right? And so I see this, and what it does to me is it makes me feel like that people who see stuff like this and then they react that way, they're looking for a quick fix, they're not getting it, and then maybe they're going somewhere else to find a quick fix, and in doing that, they're actually making the problem worse. Right? And so for those people, I kind of wanted to give a different type of analogy for this. You guys know me in analogies. I love them. And I could only so many times talk about how it's, like, complex. It's not that easy. So then I'm talking to my wife. I want to figure out some sort of skin routine so I don't look wrinkly and old as I get older, right? I need some sort of skincare routine. And so my initial thought is always like, what are you doing? Let me just do whatever you're doing in my face. Like, it's working for you. Your face looks great. Like, let me just do that. And then the conversation that we had, which I feel like we probably had this conversation last two years, I don't know, but this year I was like, oh, I could connect this to this. And now it makes complete, total sense, basically, what she's saying. She's like, listen, you've seen, like, all the different skin products I've tried, right? Because, I mean, I've seen them. There's different color bottles, there's this, there's that. I'm trying this, I'm trying that. Now. I found this cool serum from this place, and I always want to get that because it's finally working. What do you mean it's finally working? What does that mean? Right? And, you know, we talk through that, and then we start talking beyond skincare. Now we're talking makeup. We're talking about stuff. Everybody's skin is different, right? So your skin has its own microbiome, and it. And everybody's skin is different. And so to think that there's a singular product that's going to take all your wrinkles away, guys, if that existed, first off, that person might be the richest person on the planet. And two, there wouldn't be a thousand different skin products. There would be, like, the one skin product that literally works for everybody. Bam. This is what you buy. You don't want your laugh lines anymore. This is what you get. Boop. They're all gone. The end, right? But it doesn't work that way. And she was telling me she's like, you know, I've had to try certain things. And, like, she'll talk to other family members and her friends or wherever, and, like, well, what are you using? What are you using? What's working? What's not working? And they'll all try what all the other ones are trying, and then it won't work for all of them, but it works for the person who's like, yeah, I really like this one. Why? Why does it all. Why does it work for one and it doesn't work for everybody else? Because the skin system is really complex. There's a whole bunch of stuff going on in here we don't understand. We can't see it. Like I said, it's its own microbiome. It has bacteria in your skin. There's all kinds of stuff going on. And with that, different products are gonna react differently to your skin. Okay, so imagine we, like, swap this scenario, and instead of me talking about mold and this and that, I'm talking about, like, forehead wrinkles. And I'm like, yeah, if you see these forehead wrinkles, you're getting old. Like, maybe that's my whole shtick on TikTok or Instagram. You wanna know how you're getting old? Look at your head. You see wrinkles, you're old. Like, maybe that's my shtick, right? And then the response is, well, thanks for telling me I'm getting old. I've now realized I'm getting old, right? Here's the comparison. I now realize I might have a mole problem. Okay, cool. I now realize that I'm maybe getting old. How do I fix getting old? How do I fix the look of getting old? Okay, can you answer that in a single immediate? Like, let me pose the question to you. You're listening right now. If I asked you, what is the one way to stop forehead wrinkles? Go. You've got 90 seconds to tell me how to do that. Could you do that short of going to get Botox and sticking it in your forehead, which, by the way, is a band aid. Botox is the equivalent of fogging your house, right? Something that works for a split second, and then the wrinkles come back and you have to do it again, right? So now go. Your health. I'm sick. I fog. Maybe I feel better for a half a minute, a month, a week, whatever, and then I start feeling sick again. I have to do it again. That's the equivalent, right? So, like, that's not the answer. So don't tell me Botox is the answer. Tell me the root cause Way to address wrinkles in my skin. Can anyone do that in 90 seconds? The answer is no, right? Why is the answer no? Because there isn't a singular thing that does it. That exists. That's why there isn't a one single approach you can take that will magically fix everyone's wrinkles on their faces forever. It doesn't work that way. Right. You have your skin, you have your race and your ethnicity. That changes your skin type. You have how much sun exposure you have. That changes how you handle your skin. Then you have your microbiome, which is then another layer of stuff that changes the your skin. Is your skin more oily? Is it more dry? Well, if it is, then, like, the certain thing that might work for oily skin might not work for dry skin, right? Then you have this whole secondary piece, which a lot of people don't think about, but your gut has a huge impact on your skin. Huge. This is why when I was first having, like, my. My symptoms from mold exposure was all manifesting like eczema and patches and peeling stuff on my skin. It's because mold exposure was impacting me. It threw my gut off like crazy. And then all of a sudden, stuff from my gut was getting out that wasn't supposed to get out. And bam. My skin was trying to become the detox pathway, and it wasn't doing it, and I had problems. Okay, so we've now talked about ethnicity. We've talked about microbiome in your skin. We've talked about just the general, like, type of skinny. Is it oily? Is it dry? Then you throw in the component of, well, what's going on with my immune system? My gut, my this, my that. Cool. I have all these variables. Now you have 90 seconds to tell me how to make my skin not wrinkled.
You can't do it. And when I was talking to her, I was like, oh, this is the. This is another way to visualize the answer. Okay, Take it back to a house. I've got mold in this wall. How do I not feel sick anymore? How do I just fix this wall? I don't know. Where's it coming from? Is it a roof leak? Is it an exterior wall leak? How is this spread throughout the house? Has it spread beyond into other cabinetry? What if I told you that you just had to remove that patch of wall and that was it? Because that's all I saw in a picture. But I know in my head the way that water works. So you have liquid water, and then you have water vapor. The liquid water could create the problem on the wall, but the water vapor could be penetrating under all of your cabinetry. For example. What if I didn't tell you that? What if I gave you a 90 second answer that said just cut out this piece of the wall and you're going to be fine? That's the equivalent of my wife's friend telling her, oh, this cream got all the wrinkles away and she goes and puts it on and like, no it didn't. All the wrinkles are still here. Right? Except the stakes are so much higher. The stakes aren't I have wrinkles a little bit longer. The stakes are I just dropped a shitload of money on remediation and I'm still sick. Those stakes are way higher than use this product. And if it doesn't work, ah well, I'll figure something else out. Right? Like if you have mold on the wall underneath your sink in a kitchen, there's so many things we gotta think of. So many things. Is the leak? Is the sink an issue? Is the backsplash an issue? Is there a window above it that's leaking? Was there an issue maybe from a dishwasher that leaked underneath that you didn't know about and the water vapor is penetrating up the backside of the wall and that's where the mold is coming from? How far has it spread? Has it gotten under the cabinetry? What about the walls on the other side of that that you haven't looked at that you don't see like a whole lot of mold? Maybe there's a little sign of mold that's right there. How can I tell you that in an Instagram post? How can I walk through that whole process with you in 90 seconds without any back and forth feedback, without my eyes seeing it or without us interacting in some way? It's impossible to do that. The point of this, guys, social media, sharing, this podcast, all of this stuff serves a purpose, right? And for me, like I said at the top, my purpose is to open your eyes to something that might be contributing to what your health issues are. Help guide you through general concepts of the process from start to finish. This is the general concept of what an inspection looks like. Remediation, prevention, all of that stuff. There's core concepts that are a through line consistently. Same way that there's core concepts with addressing your skin, right? Like wash your face, get all the crap out of your pores. That's a core concept. Cool. But what type of soap do I use? What type of skin do you have? I don't know, but I know I need to wash my face, but if I wash my face with the wrong stuff, then my skin might get worse. So what do I do? Oh, I'll just go search on Instagram or I'll go search on TikTok or YouTube for it. Wait, this influencer doesn't know the exact makeup of my skin? How, how can they tell me what to use? They might look like me. Cool. They look like me, that's fine. But just because somebody looks the same doesn't mean that their skin, their biodiversity is exactly the same. What's going on in their gut and their stomach, what's going on in their immune system. How the hell can you see that on a 90 second video? You can't, right? So listen, I want to help guide and I've been doing it for a long time. I've gotten a lot of great feedback, so it's great. I want us to understand where the line stops and starts though. And it's not so much of me like trying to talk back to people that have been saying this, right? It's if you are thinking this, I want you to open your mind a little bit to what the real answer is and what the possibility and capability of that real answer is. And now how do you actually get that answer? I can't answer every single question down to the specific nitty and gritty of exactly what's happening and what to do for this one thing right here in a 60, 90 second video. So how does that happen? Guys, at some point you have to talk to humans to help you, okay? You have to work with somebody who understands how to do it and not try to just take, take, take from the freebies that are out there. Because honestly, they're freebies because they're conceptually core concepts that are great and that they work, but the reason they're free is because the level of specificity in those things can only be so intense. Now, some people will still charge for their general concepts. I don't do that. I give my general concepts away for free because I want people to be able to navigate this and figure out how to handle it. But at some point concepts stop and real tactics and navigation begin. Okay? And that is where working with someone directly, having someone and come in and inspect your house, who knows what the hell they're doing and is in line with the concepts that can map things out and understand things, this is the best way to get it done. I mean, imagine if you're diagnosing yourself. People do this all the time. They go to WebMB. Hey, this is my symptoms. Boom, boom, boom. I'm coughing, I'm seizing on this. Great. Bam. Do you know if you put in basic symptoms like that? How many times has my wife had something that was going on? I make fun of her for this. Sometimes she goes to WebMD and within 30 minutes, she's concerned that she has cancer. That fast rabbit hole you started with, oh, my stomach's hurting a little bit. And then within 15, 20, 30 minutes, all of a sudden, we're concerned that we're dealing with some sort of stomach cancer. It's out there. All of it's out there. And you could go any route you want. Like, if you look at my stuff and you're like, oh, I need to be concerned about this. But he didn't tell me exactly how to handle it. So I'm going to go search somewhere else. And you go find, like these twin dudes on YouTube or whatever, and they're like, hey, you want to know how to handle this? You just spray this thing on here and you're all fixed. That didn't help you. At some point, you got to come off of the freebies and we got to come off of the kind of quick solutions that we're looking for and for these more complex things that we need to deal with. Listen, your house is complex. Your health is complex. Putting champagne in a bottle is not complex. Right. You have to evaluate what you're actually trying to solve and the complexity of that thing and all of the minutiae that goes into it. Is it. Do I need to cool a champagne bottle in an hour and a half? Pretty simple. There's not a lot of side effects. There's not a lot of repercussions. If I don't cool it properly, what's the repercussion? I take it out. It's not totally cool. And I'm a little let down on New Year's, but honestly, it's my fault. Cause I didn't go buy the champagne. Right? What's the repercussion? If you take one of these kind of in the box solutions that people are pitching out there, do you go do it in your house for a mold situation? You spend a couple thousand bucks to fix it. It doesn't work. You're sick. Your kids are still sick. You think now there's no problem because somebody told you that was the way to fix it. But that's not actually the way to fix it. Now you start looking down another path because you think your house is fine. It's really not fine. But you think it is fine because you took the word of some, you know, Hee haw guy on YouTube and now you're looking for other solutions. And then what happens from there? Then your doctor is telling you, no, I still think you have a mold problem. You're like, no, I don't. I did what Joe Heeho over here told me to do in my cabinet and it's fine. So now, doctor, you must be wrong because apparently I'm putting more value in the guy on YouTube I've never spoken to in a minute in my life. But you know What? He has 50,000 views, so maybe he must know what he's talking about. So I'm going to trust him over the person who's really like an expert in this field. Because I feel like I did something and I learned something. And because we can all learn how to do everything ourselves these days, that's a hundred percent effective. I know that I can't learn how to do what the doctor does because they have to go to school all the time. It takes all these years to even learn all these situations. Which is really weird to me because then we're saying, well, because I can't learn how to do it. I'm putting less trust in them and I'm putting more trust in somebody. And something I could learn to do by myself, that is completely ass backwards. Right? Like that person who's telling you I do something in 90 seconds. I mean, sure, like if it's a small thing, yeah, this, this practitioner that's been doing this for 20 years and really works with people that are in your situation, if they're telling you you have an issue, but then you went and tried some shortcut solution, it didn't work, and you go back to them and you say, no, you're wrong. I fixed it with a shortcut solution. Like, did you really, like, maybe we need to reevaluate who we're putting the priority of our trust in. Right? Who's guiding us, who's, who's helping us navigate this stuff. Right? Because then what happens? You say, doctor, you know what? I don't think you know what you're doing because I'm not progressing fast enough. Because I saw online that if I get rid of the exposure and I take a couple binders, I'll start to feel better. So it's been a year. I haven't felt completely, I'm not feeling completely better yet. I feel like I handled this. I don't think that, you know what you're doing anymore. Doctor, you're fired. I'm going to go find somebody else who's giving me the answer that I want to hear. Because I was searching online on YouTube and TikTok and Instagram that this stuff could happen a lot faster. And because I saw that in a 90 second clip, I think that that's what reality is right now. And the end, guys, if you do that, you're. You're going to drive yourself down a path that's going to waste you time, it's going to waste you money, it's going to take years off your life. Don't do it. Okay? When you're thinking about what you're searching for solutions on, think about the type of thing you're searching for a solution on. And then ask yourself, is this the type of thing I'm willing to take advice from a literal stranger that I've never spoken to and I will never speak to in person again? Am I literally, am I willing to take advice from that person on this topic? And sometimes the answer is yes. I needed to know where the screws were for my washing machine. Were the stakes very high? No, not really. Am I willing to take advice from some random guy that was somewhere in the Carolinas, I think about how to open my particular brand of washing machine? Yeah. Because the stakes weren't high. Would I trust that guy to help me diagnose where a pinhole leak is throughout all of the walls of my house? No. What the hell does he know about it? He's not here. He can't see it. So you bring a plumber in and you have them actually diagnose everything. Right. You interact with the human at some point that can look at your specific situation and create a customized response for your situation. There's a time and place for searching around and getting quick answers for things that are simple in life and it's amazing that that exists. But don't let that bleed over into these more complex issues that are going on and have that derail your progress. Just something to think about for you guys. Anyways, have a good one, guys. As always, super appreciative and grateful for all of you. Hope you guys are having a good month so far. We'll talk to you next time.
