Authenticity in Vulnerability: A Guide for High Achievers

A talk on why high achievers struggle to show vulnerability and how childhood experiences with caregivers shape emotional expression. The speaker argues that embracing vulnerability leads to authentic self-expression and healing.
So our parents, God bless them, parents, teachers, whatever, they didn't have any language for emotions. They just knew that if you were feeling something, I was uncomfortable. So I need to do whatever I need to do to shut you down so you stop feeling that way so that I can feel better. And parents often do this with their kids, right? Like, their kids are upset about something and the immediate response is like, how can I fix you to make you feel better so that I can feel better? This is why I have this saying. Like, don't pass the Kleenex. Like, let people be in their discomfort can be there for somebody. So opening back up to being vulnerable can feel terrifying because those are the moments where you were shut down, where you were told that your feelings weren't valid. And this is how so many high achievers get trapped in your emotions and unplug from that wisdom of their body. Because other people who couldn't be with their emotions told you you your emotions were wrong, you couldn't trust them and you needed to shift them. But it was nothing more than them trying to get away from their own discomfort. So I really love that you're going to soften and open back up to this, because healing is an incredibly vulnerable process. And yes, when you can tap into that, that's like, you know, you've taken off all the layers of clothing. That's truly when you can be your full, authentic self.
