A neurologist explains how phantom limb pain works and why standard physical training misses the point. The key: gait is a reflexive nervous system response, not something you control consciously. Brain training can rewire how your nervous system handles chronic pain.
Standard client comes to a personal trainer, they're saying, this day we're going to do biceps and back. And I'm thinking about we're going to do left parietal lobe today and right brainstem or something like that. Right. So it's completely different targeting. Right. But the brain controls everything. Right. So then the second piece of it is an assessment. The assessment. I could assess one thing and start making a very wild guess from that point. Right. But when someone comes to me, I do a gait assessment, which is basically a window into their neurological function. Because gait is a reflexive response of the nervous system. You don't think about how you walk. To start thinking about how you walk, then you're going to have anxiety about it, which is common with people in chronic pain states. Right. But it should be more reflexive, and it actually shows a lot about the function.
