This is a YouTube video titled "The big five personality test" containing a monologue by Beverley Simpson recorded in May 2024. Beverley discusses her academic background in motivation and social psychology at the University of Michigan and shares her initial skepticism about personality psychology based on debates she observed between social and personality psychologists.
So, like I said, I studied motivation, mindset and motivation at the University of Michigan, and really in the social psychology department, which is the study of psychology between groups of people. And I just remember listening to the professors and the graduate student advisors often talk about the clashes they would have with the personality psychologists. And they would constantly talk about the lack of scientific validity or how they was just, like, making stuff up. Or they would often equate it to horoscopes and astrology and not really being a real science, and they're just making stuff up and telling people what they want to hear and all this stuff. And so I remember actually coming out of that experience having a really negative view about personality psychology. Like, they're just. They're making it up. There's nothing going on here.
