This is a YouTube video titled "What is an athlete and are they even real" containing a monologue or talk recorded on October 10, 2023, discussing the concept of athletes and how everyday life activities can impose physical demands similar to athletic performance, especially as people age. The speaker is Jonathan Herbert, and the content explores the idea of framing life as an athletic event.
I think of an athlete just as somebody who's like training to perform some task. So I see you've got the typical athlete like sports, you know, whether that's an endurance sport or a strength sport or obstacle course racing or whatever. And then with my more gen pop, like people that just want to live a healthy life, I like to frame life as an athletic event. If you look at even some of the ground reaction forces that you experience on a day to day life, they've done some studies where they've put like wireless force plate insoles basically in people's shoes and have them do daily tasks. And some of those can approach like two times body weight, which especially as you age, you know, aging, aging well is really a skill. And as you age you get a lot of this, a lot of this frailty that comes if you haven't trained, you know, and even carrying the groceries in, walking up the steps, chasing after a kid that runs out in the street. The forces that your body experiences sometimes aren't even that different from an athlete on a field. So. Hmm, okay, great.
