Cameron Herold argues that a leader's core job is to grow people: increasing employees' skills and confidence drives business growth. He describes an upside-down org chart where leaders support employees and uses a two-ladder metaphor (skills ladder and confidence ladder) to explain how developing both enables greater autonomy and true accountability.

So the leader's core job is to grow people. I've always believed that the more we grow our people the more they'll grow our business. And I really see the org chart as being upside down where the CEO is at the bottom supporting the VPs, supporting the managers, supporting the employees who are supporting the customers. And our job is to grow our employees skills and confidence almost like they're climbing up two ladders, their left foot and their left hand climbing up the skills ladder, their right hand and the right foot climbing up the confidence ladder. We have to grow their skills and grow their confidence and grow their skills which grows their confidence which grows their skills which grows their confidence. And if we're constantly focusing on growing their skills and confidence they can take on more projects, they can work with more autonomy. They don't take up as much of our time. We're no longer holding people accountable. We have accountable people. That's the leader's core job is to grow people.
