How to Manage a Visionary CEO's Ideas

In this talk Cameron Herold outlines how a COO or senior leader can effectively manage the flood of ideas that a visionary CEO generates without stalling the organization. He frames the COO’s role as the “brake” to the CEO’s “gas” or the “leash” to the CEO’s “dragon,” emphasizing that the brake must be gentle—not a parking brake that stops the company. The core process involves first affirming the idea, then taking the CEO on a brief walk to ask the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the proposal. During this walk the COO gathers details about the envisioned outcome, best‑case and worst‑case scenarios, required headcount and budget, and then evaluates the idea against three impact dimensions: employee happiness, customer satisfaction, and financial performance (profitability, revenue, gross margin). By systematically questioning and assessing ideas, the COO can either green‑light, defer, or decline them while keeping the CEO engaged and the company moving forward.
