In this interview excerpt, Speaker B reflects on the pressure he felt growing up on his family ranch to inherit and sustain the family legacy, a pressure that he initially resisted. After college, he worked at a vertically integrated meat company and restaurant in the Bay Area, an experience that sparked a new perspective on the connection between food, meat production, and ranching. This insight led him to envision creating value for his own family ranch and other family-owned ranches by integrating them into a broader supply network, addressing needs such as sourcing and distribution as his family’s Stemple Creek Ranch expands.

When you think back to growing up on the ranch, did you ever see yourself running this meat division for another ranch?
If I could be honest for a second, I felt a lot of pressure growing up. It was nothing that my parents did intentionally. They did everything to present opportunities, but nothing was forced. There was pressure for me to, you know, take over the family legacy and not fail and not lose everything. When I was younger, I had trouble with that and I wrestled with that. In some ways, I didn't want to be a part of it, so it didn't Really come on to me until after college. And I actually worked for that company down in the Bay Area, that meat company and the restaurant. They had a restaurant, which was really cool. It was completely vertically integrated. I, once I got in there, things just started. It was like sparks going off, you know, I was like the food and the meat and the ranch and this, this arc of how those things are connected. And I started thinking about my family ranch and how I can provide value there. And is there a possibility for me to try to do something that can help not just that business, but my family ranch in some way, and maybe other family ranches too, and try to integrate into a network. As we grow Stemple Creek Ranch, we need help. We need supply help. My family being part of it, and there's others too. And that's kind of the larger vision that I started to feel in those early days of me working in the meat industry.
